MSA Guide to Gas Sensor Selection and PlacementSTEP 1: To determine where to placesensors, perform an analysis of thepotential gas hazards in your facility.STEP 2: Create drawings indicatingall potential leak sites, as well asthe severity of each site’s hazardpotential.There are two main categories ofhazardous locations:A. Potential gas dischargepoints. These are placeswhere hazardous gases may bereleased, such as valve stemseals, gaskets, compressionfittings and expansion joints.B. Potential contact areas.These are places wherehazardous gases may endangerworkers, or damage equipmentor property. Examples includepopulated areas, confinedspaces, pits, stairwells, crawlspaces, shelters, and residential,business and industrial environmentslocated nearby.Calibration and Sensor PlacementIn general, when placing sensorsthe following principles should beconsidered:• Place sensors in areas where theair currents are likely to produce thehighest gas concentration, includingareas where gas buildup is likely,such as corners or stopping pointsof moving devices that release gas.• If you are attempting to take arepresentative room sample, do notplace sensors near entrances orfresh air vents (because the sampleconcentration will be diluted byincoming air) unless there is a need tosample that specific area of the room.• Place sensors close to the possiblegas/leak source.• Place combustible gas sensorsbetween the potential leak and theignition source.• Place toxic gas and oxygen sensorsbetween the potential leak and thepopulated area, and in the workers’breathing zone.• Consider ease of access to the sensorfor maintenance requirements, such asperiodic calibration. Use a remote sensorfor high or inaccessible locations.General IndustryHVAWater & WastewaterOil, Gas & Petrochemical4444• Avoid mounting sensors near radiotransmitters or other RFI-producingsources (e.g., welding activity andinduction heaters), to reduce possibleRF interference.• Avoid locations where airborneparticles may coat or contaminatethe sensor, such as paint booths.• Install sensors in a position thatprevents water or dust accumulationon the sensor head (which may impedethe diffusion of gas into the sensor).The preferred position is facingdownward, but horizontal placementis also acceptable.• Facility air intakes are generally goodlocations for sensors.• Ensure that the entire area inquestion is sufficiently monitored,including little-used areas such asclosets, warehouses and otherstorage areas.• Factor in the vapor density of themonitored gases when comparedto air.STEP 3: Since gases do not alwaysbehave in the same way, take airflow conditions, as well as potentialgas pockets, into considerationbefore placing sensors. MSA smoketubes (P/N 458481) can be useful inmeasuring the direction and rate ofair flow to determine areas wheregases may accumulate.Gas Density and Sensor PlacementGases Gas Density Sensor Placementcarbon dioxide,greater than air closer to the groundheavy hydrocarbonshydrogen, methane less than air near the ceilingcarbon monoxie, nitrogen similar to air according to air current path,at or near breathing level(usually 4 to 6 ft. from floor)Note: This is for informational purposes only and is intended for use as a general guide to important considerations in sensor placement.It is not intended to serve as an exhaustive review of all considerations.
