Industrial Safety ApparelFRAS (Flame Resistant Anti-Static)FRAS Garments significantly reduces burn injury, giving the wearer escape time, increasing chances of survival if caught ina mechanical flash fire or electrical plasma arc flash. Anti-static fibres of fabric are blended with conducting yarn whichpromotes the distribution of static electrical charge (1149.1) dissipating the charge preventing accumulation,electrical discharge and ignition to occur.Standards - NFPA70E, NFPA 2112:2007 (National Fire Protection Association)Numerous standards and test methods exist that help define the performance of FR Garments. The purpose of test methodsand standards is to enable users to objectively evaluate materials and define minimum performance criteria for fabrics andgarments. Using FR products that meet the performance requirements of standards is the only way of ensuring personnel arewearing acceptable FR garments. NFPA 70E standard is a North American standard for Electrical Safety Requirements foremployees workplaces, the standard requires that employees wear FR protective clothing wherever there is possible exposureto an electrical arc flash. It requires employers to perform a flash hazard analysis to determine the flash protection boundarydistance. It is difficult for employers to always perform such analysis and consequently they have set the requirements toHRC Hazard Risk Category Level 2 which requires a minimum rating of 8 cal/cm 2 . All MSA Ultimate FR Carbtex garments exceedlevel 2 compliance of the NFPA 70E standard.NFPA 70E (Electric Arc Ratings) This test identifies and measures the level of energy required to create ignitionand second degree burn, the test is on the finished garment it is stationary and exposed to 8000 amps through a 12” gapreaching temperatures from 6000 - 10,000 degree F.HRC Level 1: 4 cal/cm 2 minimum. HRC Level 2: 8 cal/cm 2 minimum, HRC Level 3: 25 cal/cm 2 minimum, HRC Level 4: 40 cal/cm 2minimum. All Carbtex products are level 2 or greater and wearing a double layer combination eg Duragard Coveralls overThermtex Undergarments provides 46.8 cal/cm 2 well into HRC Level 4. NFPA 2112: 2007. This standard requires ThermalMannequin or Pyroman tests be conducted on finished garments being exposed to flame at 2350 degree F for 3 seconds,the mannequin must register a less than 50% body burn in order to pass the test and records the degree of burn eithersecond or third degree.
