KSCADE COURSES<strong>Course</strong> <strong>Description</strong> <strong>Book</strong> 2012-2013KSCADE (K-12 <strong>School</strong>s/ Colleges Alliance for Distance Education) is an interactive television network that combines two-way audio and video withInternet access. More specifically, KSCADE provides users the ability to continuously view remote sites, with a maximum of one origination site to threereceive sites in a “conference” or class session. The KSCADE network currently consists of 28 sites, including 23 K-12 districts, Fox Valley TechnicalCollege and Northeast Wisconsin Technical College and, through the new state BCN network, can now connect to schools and content providers anywherein Wisconsin and the U.S.Street Law (9300) gives students a practical understanding of law and our legal system. Street Law focuses on legal issues relevant to students lives anddevelops knowledge and skills essential in our law oriented society.‣ C+ grade point average or consent of instructor (.5 credits) Spring Semester 11,12________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Careers in Criminal Justice (9323-24) Students in this course can expect to explore and discover the wide variety of Criminal Justice related careers inAmerica. All levels of employment from municipal to county, state, and federal are examined along with specific duties and hiring standards for a varietyof positions. Thiscourse focuses on the roles of police, prosecution, courts and corrections. It also covers how the criminal justice process has evolved to what it is today.This course is designed for ITV delivery. It can be used as an elective credit.‣ - None (.5 credits) Both Semesters 11,12________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Medical Terminology (9309 & 9318) focuses on the component parts of medical terms: Prefixed, suffixes, and root words. Students practice formation,analysis and reconstruction of terms. Emphasis is on spelling, definition and pronunciation. Introduction to operative, diagnostic, therapeutic andsymptomatic terminology of all body systems, as well as systemic and surgical terminology will be covered.‣ - None (.5 credit) Both Semesters 11, 12_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________The Future (9327) where are we going? Will our civilization trend to the material and social progress that has taken place the past 500 years? Or are weheading toward a “Dark Age” such as what happened after the collapse of Rome? This class will study economics, science, technology, social andpolitical trends as well as history to discover the patterns and cycles of civilization in order to better understand the expert predictions. <strong>Course</strong> <strong>Description</strong> <strong>Book</strong> 2012-2013Research and Technical Writing (Blended) (9328) in this course, students will create a research question, create a research proposal, do comparativeresearch and create a final research report similar to a college level research paper. This class will also cover elements of effective technical writing.‣ Successful completion of a Composition course (.5 credits) Spring Semester 11,12Robotics Programmable Logic Control (9329) this basic course in Robotics is a hands on lab based class. Equipment is provided by the originatingschool. The lab package includes, Industrial Programmable Logic Controllers, NXT Bluetooth enabled robot kits, and the VEX robotics system used inFIRST national robot competition to teach robotics concepts. A new addition to the lab equipment package is a micro controller with simplifiedprogramming. Software, small hand tools and electrical parts are also included. A new option is an advanced programming language system (RobotC) with a simulated robot environment. This option would require the receiving school to either down load a limited free copy to their computersor purchase a 6 seat license for $149. Students will be able to operate the robots in the game like environment and then down load the code to thereal NXT and VEX robots in the classroom and the code will run the real robot.*Receiving schools should have one or more computers available for students to program the robots but internet access is not required on these computers.‣ - None (.5 credits) Fall Semester 11,12________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Creative Writing (Blended) (9331) Designed to provide students with the opportunity to explore the basic types of writing. Students analyze thedevelopment of short stories, plays, memoirs, and poetry. Students write examples of each form and are required to maintain a journal. Basic grammaticaland usage skills are reinforced throughout the course. The use of the writing process is emphasized. Students will work to complete a writing portfoliothroughout the term. Students will meet on ITV every other day, while logging into the online classroom on the off days. This course is a great experiencefor students who are looking to prepare themselves for what might be a typical college online course. It is also perfect for the self-directed student whoprefers to write papers at home, on their own time. Student must have a proven track record of assignment completion, and it is expected that students willfind access to a computer with Microsoft Word and Internet capabilities.‣- None (.5 credits) Fall Semester 11,12_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Career Development 101 (Blended) (9333) this is a “hybrid” course consisting of both live instruction and online learning activities. Students will needaccess to the internet to complete the course. Prepare now for your future careers. This course will cover and discuss the topics of self-assessment, careerexploration, career planning, job search strategies, and career portfolio development.
