FoundationN E W SOh, The Places They GoWinning a Scholarship is Just the First Step of a Longer JourneySpring 2012Every year, the Seven Oaks EducationFoundation awards more than 80scholarships to students throughout theSeven Oaks School Division. But awarding the scholarship is only thebeginning because a scholarship is asmuch about the work that comes afterthe awards ceremony as it is about thework that came before. With that thought in mind, we catch upwith a few previous scholarship winnersfrom the Seven Oaks School Division tosee what they are doing now, and howtheir scholarship win impacted their lives –wherever their career path has taken them.Name: Keeley EdwardsGraduated: From WestKildonan Collegiate in2009Scholarships Received: The Nellie& Ben Zaidman Memorial Scholarshipfrom the Seven Oaks EducationFoundation, and Advanced EarlyAdmissions and an entrance scholarshipwith the University of ManitobaPost-Graduation Path: ComeSeptember 2012, Keeley will beginher fourth year at the University ofManitoba, in her third year of theBiochemistry Honours program. Inthe meantime, she’ll be spending hersummer working in a biochemistryresearch lab at the University. On Receiving Her Scholarships:“Receiving the Nellie and Ben ZaidmanMemorial Scholarship from the SevenOaks Education Foundation wascertainly an honor. Being a scholarshiprecipient has helped to reinforce thevalue of working hard and putting effortinto my education, and that ethic hasnot been lost in my years at university.I believe that having academic awards(monetary or otherwise) have been, andwill continue to be, a valuable part of myresume.”On the Importance of Scholarships:“I feel that scholarships are important,as they recognize and reward the effortsof students that act above and beyondexpectation. Although these students areoften those that do not require additionalmotivation, for many students, receivingscholarships becomes a goal; a goalwhich those students will strive to reach. In addition, with the cost of a postsecondaryeducation, scholarships are aninvaluable aid in paying for the educationthat their recipients desire to obtain.”Name: Alaina EdwardsGraduated: From WestKildonan Collegiate in2008Scholarships Received: WestKildonan Collegiate Institute 50thAnniversary Scholarship #2 as well as theHogg Centennial University of Manitobaentrance scholarship and the ManitobaYouth Leadership Scholarship.Post-Graduation Path: Alaina is finishingher final year of the Commerce HonoursProgram at the University of Manitoba, with a double major in Finance andLogistics and Supply Chain Management. In the meantime, she’s working as asummer student at Manitoba Hydro in thecorporate budgeting department. On Receiving Her Scholarships:“On a personal level, the scholarshipimpacted me by aiding in paying offsome of the costs of university. Incombination with other scholarships,it helped in covering almost my fullfirst year of course tuition. As tuitionand textbooks are so costly, it wasextremely helpful financially. I am verythankful for the scholarship and thesupport and opportunities it gave me.”On the Importance of Scholarships:“Scholarships help create opportunitiesfor people that may not otherwiseexperience those opportunities due tolack of funding. They also provide something for studentsto strive for in high school, encouragingthem to work harder. I feel this is goodmotivation as it helps encourage asense of work ethic which is extremelyimportant in University.”Name: Cameron PatrickGraduated: From WestKildonan Collegiate in2003Scholarships Received: The SevenOaks School Division/Seven OaksEducation Foundation Faculty ofEducation Scholarship, the Rotary Clubof North Winnipeg Scholarship and anEntrance Scholarship to the University ofWinnipeg.Post-Graduation Path: Cameronis currently working for the City ofWinnipeg as an operator at the watertreatment plant.CONTACT WAYNE SHIMIZU at Wayne.Shimizu@7oaks.org • VISIT SOEF at www.7oaks.org

On Receiving His Scholarships:“The scholarships I received help me goto university even though I did not comefrom an affluent background and had towork my way through university. Everylittle bit of extra money meant a littlemore time I could spend concentratingon school work.”On the Importance of Scholarships:“Personally, I feel scholarships are animportant part of the education systembecause they help students like myselfwho may not be able to afford to go touniversity to do so.”Name: Ian MartinWeedmarkGraduated: From WestKildonan Collegiate in 2006Scholarships Received: The SevenOaks Scholarship Board/ Seven OaksEducation Foundation Scholarship, theCreative Arts Scholarship, and a Universityof Winnipeg Entrance ScholarshipPost-Graduation Path: Ian graduatedwith his Bachelor of BusinessAdministration Degree from theUniversity of Winnipeg in 2010. It wasa confidence boost, and meant thatpeople saw potential in myself thatmaybe I did not completely see. I hadalways known I was going to University, but receiving the scholarships gave asense that I deserved to be there, andproduced a drive that made a significantdifference not only in my educationalpath but also my personal life.I am always astounded when I realizeas a 23 year old I have landed a greatcareer start in an amazing company, purchased my first home in 2011, andhave a limitless future ahead of me.And I know this future could not havebeen possible without the supportand confidence I received with thescholarships from the Seven OaksSchool Division.”On the Importance of Scholarships:“The scholarships were important forme personally, because they allowedme to complete university debt-free.This eliminated any hindrance of studentloans, but it also removed the financialstress away from my daily life, whichallowed me to emphasize my focus onmy studies.Without the scholarships I guaranteeI would not be the man and businessleader I am today!”Name: Bryce AlexanderWeedmarkGraduated: From WestKildonan Collegiate in 2006Scholarships Received: The SevenOaks Scholarship Board/Seven OaksEducation Foundation scholarship, theCreative Arts scholarship, the JackRaber Community Service scholarshipand a University of Winnipeg EntrancescholarshipPost-Graduation Path: Havingcompleted a Bachelor of Science inBiology at the University of Winnipeg,Bryce is currently finishing his seconddegree at the University of Manitoba(his Bachelor of Medical Rehabilitation –Respiratory Therapy).Come summer, Bryce plans on workingat one of the hospitals here in Winnipegas a respiratory therapist. On Receiving His Scholarships:“For me, scholarships were morethan just the monetary alleviation thatthey provide. What impacted me wasthe knowledge that my high schooleducators foresaw a future for me.After years of scholastic andextracurricular work, they chose torecognize me in a truly humblingway. That act alone instilled in me aconfidence that carried me throughoutmy University career and continues evennow as I graduate again.”On the Importance of Scholarships:“Scholarships are important to youth forso many reasons. They are a means foreducation, they instill a sense of pridein schooling, and they represent anachievement for what the students haveaccomplished.”Name: David RosnerGraduated: From MaplesCollegiate in 1998Scholarships Received:A G. & R.
