S P E C I F I C A T I O N SHach astroTOC UVProcess TOC AnalyzerApplication—for industrialprocess water and wastewaterThe chemical/petrochemical industries have numerousapplications for on-line Total Organic Carbon(TOC) analysis, although the pharmaceutical, sugar, food and beverage industries have applicationsas well. The primary application is chemical and petrochemicalplants which use large amounts of waterfor processing product. These plants are organizedinto business units that are responsible for theproduction of a particular chemical product.Water is heated in the boiler to create steam thatis used for power generation, and cracking hydrocarbonsin preparation for further processing.Once the steam is used for heating in the productionprocess, the TOC levels are measured to determineif they are low enough for the steam to be repolishedand recirculated to avoid the high cost ofthe initial clean-up. If TOC levels in the steamexceed the limit for repolishing, then it is sent towaste. This application is commonly known as"Return Condensate TOC".Water from a natural source is used to cool theproduct in the heat exchanger and a TOC measurementis taken to detect organic carboncompounds for early detection of process leaksand determine if the water can be returned to it'sorigin or must be sent to waste for clean up. Thisapplication is known as "Cooling Water TOC".The unit outfall application is a TOC measurementtaken at the outfall of the business unit. Thiswater has been in contact with the process, contaminatedand sent directly into the wastewatertreatment plant. If the TOC levels indicate a spillcondition, the business unit notifies the treatmentplant of an incoming high TOC concentrationwaste stream. Operators can divert the stream intoa holding tank or pond, to be released later intothe treatment process at a controlled rate. The unitoutfall TOC measurement assures the business unitis charged fairly for the clean up.Industrial designThe Hach astroTOC UV Process TOCAnalyzer is a rugged, low-maintenanceanalyzer designed to withstand the mostsevere conditions. Designed as a trueprocess analyzer, it features a dual-compartmentenclosure that separates andprotects the electronics from the analyticalsection.Modular construction, a streamlineddesign and large-bore flow paths simplifymaintenance and service. For severeapplications, an optional self-cleaningblowback filter removes large particlesfrom sample lines, and an optional airpurifier improves the quality of the compressedair supply by removing CO 2 .The modular design also offers a broadspectrum of factory-set analysis ranges.Advanced diagnosticsThe Hach astroTOC UV Process TOCAnalyzer features advanced diagnosticsthat help protect the analyzer duringprocess spill conditions. Loss of sampleand loss of UV reactor flow are standardintegrated diagnostic features, as well asloss of sparger flow, loss of carrier gas,and pump tube deterioration. Optionalalarms for reagent levels and enclosurespills are also available.During a spill event, operators can attend toother instruments while the astroTOC UV remainsprotected. A programmable process spill thresholdautomatically takes the instrument off-line andinto auto-clean mode when TOC readings exceedthis threshold. The instrument auto recovers andreturns to standard operation when TOC measurementsreturn to acceptable levels. The Hach astroTOC UVProcess TOC Analyzer• Industrial design withstands the mostsevere conditions• Advanced diagnostics• Flexible analysis system allows analysis ofhigh salt and hard-to-oxidize samples• Based on the proven Astro processTOC analyzer platform• Drift- and interference-free NDIR detectorwith PVDF (KYNAR) flow-throughcell is impervious to corrosion

Flexible analysis systemThe astroTOC UV Analyzer features dual-rangenon-dispersive infrared (NDIR) CO 2 detection witha multi-staged UV lamp reactor and on-boardsample dilution. These features enable high salt, high suspended solids, and hard-to-oxidize sampleanalysis. While the analyzer is factory-set for asingle range, it can be easily adapted to a broadand flexible selection of ranges, from 0-5 mg/L to0-20,000 mg/L.Based on an established platformThe Hach astroTOC UV Process TOC Analyzer wasdesigned and manufactured based on more than25 years of industry-leading TOC analysis experience. With hundreds of installations worldwide, thisanalyzer was developed with input from many endusers and our extensive global service network.Principle of operationThe astroTOC UV Analyzer combines chemical andultraviolet oxidation techniques in a low-temperaturereactor to deliver direct TOC measurements. It usesa multi-staged UV oxidation reactor and a chemicallyimpervious non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) CO 2detector system, assuring full compliance withStandard Methods 5310 C and EPA method 415.1.In the first analysis step, the sample is mixedwith acid, converting the total inorganic carbon(TIC) into CO 2 . The TIC sparger removes all theCO 2 from the sample solution. Subsequently, theTIC-free sample is mixed with sodium persulfateand routed through the UV reactor, oxidizing theTOC into CO 2 . The gas/liquid mixture is transportedby the carrier gas into the gas-liquid separator(GLS), where the sample gas is separated anddiverted into the NDIR detector for the direct,interference-free CO 2 measurement. The resultingCO 2 concentration measurement is directly proportionalto the original TOC concentration foundin the sample. The front panel displays the TOCconcentration in mg/L.Detection methodASTM, EN, EPA, ISO and Standard Methods recommendTOC analysis methods using NDIR detection. This technique provides stable, accurate measurementby detecting CO 2 gas. The detector performsCO 2 measurement and compares it against a referencemeasurement. The difference between thetwo measurements is equal to the concentrationof CO 2 present in the cell. The NDIR measurement rays in the astroTOCUV Analyzer follow a direct path to a concave mirrorand a bundled path back to the receiver. Thisavoids the inherent drawbacks of the wall-bouncepath, including loss of sensitivity and inaccuratemeasurement due to the interference of dust particlesor water droplets on the NDIR cell wall.Non-corrosive NDIR detectorThe cell body of the astroTOC UV NDIR detectionsystem is made of PVDF (KYNAR) that is imperviousto corrosion. The mirror and window are madeof sapphire, which is less susceptible to scratchingand therefore helps to provide a continuouslyaccurate measurement.LCD display shows TOCconcentration in mg/LMulti-stage UV-reactor providesfull oxidation of TOCIntegrated valve manifoldfor automatic calibration, validation, and cleaning
