L P K F P rotoM<strong>at</strong> <strong>at</strong> E nercon <strong>GmbH</strong>The parallels obtrude: both <strong>Enercon</strong> and <strong>LPKF</strong> <strong>ProtoM<strong>at</strong></strong>s are all about rot<strong>at</strong>ion – even if <strong>the</strong> impressiverotors of <strong>the</strong> intern<strong>at</strong>ional wind power specialists spin in a completely dimension. <strong>As</strong>ide from <strong>the</strong> tall towers, nacelles and blades <strong>the</strong>y require quite a number of electronics to supply <strong>the</strong> extracted energy.Continued advancement is required to yield maximumperformance in all m<strong>at</strong>ters. At <strong>Enercon</strong> <strong>the</strong> Test SystemsDepartment is working on <strong>the</strong> company’s own, optimized equipment for inspecting and approvingpitch control units, power units or boards, e.g. controlorpower cards. Here <strong>Enercon</strong> h<strong>as</strong> been relying on an<strong>LPKF</strong> <strong>ProtoM<strong>at</strong></strong> <strong>S62</strong> milling plotter since 2006.The minute Holger Lübben loads his layout d<strong>at</strong>a onto<strong>the</strong> computer and clicks <strong>the</strong> structuring start button, things start moving: <strong>at</strong> speeds up to 62,000 rot<strong>at</strong>ionsper minute <strong>the</strong> system mills conductor p<strong>at</strong>hs into fullyco<strong>at</strong>ed m<strong>at</strong>erials, vi<strong>as</strong> and finally cuts <strong>the</strong> PCB from<strong>the</strong> substr<strong>at</strong>e m<strong>at</strong>erial. The <strong>ProtoM<strong>at</strong></strong> auto<strong>at</strong>ically picks<strong>the</strong> right tool. An <strong>LPKF</strong>-MiniContac RS quickly andreliably pl<strong>at</strong>es <strong>the</strong> through-holes in <strong>the</strong> PCB.The milling machine takes <strong>the</strong> layout d<strong>at</strong>a from <strong>the</strong>CAD program, turning <strong>the</strong>m into functional PCBs. Itcan process m<strong>at</strong>erials such <strong>as</strong> pl<strong>as</strong>tic, hard paper, aluminum, FBE from one to 10 millimeters thick. But <strong>the</strong> <strong>LPKF</strong> <strong>ProtoM<strong>at</strong></strong> is also quite handy for o<strong>the</strong>rapplic<strong>at</strong>ions: it can produce me<strong>as</strong>uring adapters, componentpart fixtures, front panels and special signs forwind turbines throughout <strong>the</strong> world.Holger Lübben doesn’t want to give up his <strong>ProtoM<strong>at</strong></strong><strong>S62</strong> – with one exception: after testing <strong>the</strong> more powerful<strong>LPKF</strong> H100 <strong>ProtoM<strong>at</strong></strong> he sees th<strong>at</strong> model <strong>as</strong> aworthy replacement.Pictured:Front: <strong>Enercon</strong> produces prototypes and smallb<strong>at</strong>ches of me<strong>as</strong>uring devices in houseLeft: PCBs are inspected in <strong>the</strong> magazine tableAbove: The <strong>LPKF</strong> <strong>ProtoM<strong>at</strong></strong> not only mills PCBs,but also adapters and fixtures.
