<strong>Live</strong> <strong>News</strong> — A <strong>Survival</strong> <strong>Guide</strong> for <strong>Journalists</strong>Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo lights a memorial in Uchuraccay,Ayacucho, Peru, for eight journalists and their guide, who weremurdered in 1983. For 20 years the memory was kept alive <strong>of</strong> JorgeSedano Falcón from La República newspaper, Eduardo de la PiniellaPalao, Pedro Sánchez Gavidia and Félix Gavilán Huamán from ElDiario de Marka, Willy Retto Torres and Jorge Luis Mendivil Trellesfrom El Observador, Amador García Yanque from Oiga, and OctavioInfante García from Panorama. The journalists and their guide, JuanArgumedo García, were murdered while investigating killings inPeru's internal conflict. A commission <strong>of</strong> inquiry accused 17 localpeople, and three <strong>of</strong> them were eventually were convicted <strong>of</strong> murder.The people behind the killings were never revealed. Some blamedguerrillas from the Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso); others blamedthe military. Several witnesses and some <strong>of</strong> those accused diedmysteriously during investigations. The murders came to symbolisepain and division in Peruvian society. In April 2002, Peru’s Truth andReconciliation Commission held public hearings in Ayacucho.President Toledo lit the memorial on October 3 2002 and namedJanuary 26 as National Martyrs Day for Peruvian journalism.Photo: AP / Oscar Paredes / Prensa Palacio99
