And so you are!When in your life could be traced the attempted endeavorof a fervent lover of freedom, a patriot in deeds, a thinker unslaved,who dared the risks of life and all by voluntarily steppingroto the trap of his enemies only to be near his country, as aphysician risking dangers only to reach his patient, you indeedset an example for every youth of our fatherland. If for any motiveyour enemies beneath amatorial cloak should besmirch yourstainless memory by any irresponsibility attributed to your name,then should all the youth of this our native land join hands andswear to make their watch that not an unclean hand shall everdefile your sacred memory!As b3lated wreaths, therefore, these pages are dedicated to you,the Filipino Martyr, who was at once the enemy of hypocrisy,intolerante, slavery, disunion, irresponsibility, and every othercurse on humanity!
PREFACEIt has always been said that the question of Dr. Rizal's Retractionis the inevitable battle-ground between Catholics, on onehand, and the Masons and <strong>non</strong>-Catholics, on the other. At least ithas been so for almost thirty vine years since it was alleged thatDr. Rizal retracted, before he died, his anti-Catholic writings andpropaganda as well as his affiliation to Masonry. While the Cathelicsclaimed that Dr. Rizal retracted but they could not, priorto the time of the recent discovery, present the document of Dr.Rizal's Retraction, those of the opposing camp had been demandingfor that long lost document which they, Ihinking that there«ras <strong>non</strong>e, believed could not he discovered at all, but they arenow taken aghast because the alleged doeument had been discovered.The Catholics, however, now believe that such a discoverywill end the battle in their favor while the opponentscould not admit that they are losing their groud but yet theycould not find arguments to belie the Catholics' claim. Fromthis observation it is clear that the question is not simply endedhere. This discovery is just, the beginning of a more fundamentalquestion which, when truly answered to the best ofhuman capability as helped by every legitimate method andmeans science can avail us, will enable us to clarify our befoggedideas concerning the same.The writer believes to all good intents and purposes that thediscovery of the document in question affords us the greatestopportunity of solving this question once and for all—but if wewish that this question shall forever and ever remain obscure itis better that such document should not have been discovered atall—unless, of course, even science cannot help us in its solution.But because at present science has so far advanced in the fieldin which this question must be solved and where various similarquestions have actually been solved, there is no doubt that humanignorante can no longer prevail here. Such an assuranceis an apology that the writer could offer for the present undertaking.While human work may be done with error, since, as it iscommonly believed, "to err is human," the writer has alwaysendeavored, as far as possible, to avoid illogical and unnecessaryinferences. He holds that logical necessity—the exclusion of impossibleinferences, thus leaving only the possible and the trueones—is the rigorous rule to be applied here as in any other
