OCTOBER 2005 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Could we use an OOS based business/ professional services centre? Dear Editor I have an intuition that there may be a number of people in OOS who are functioning as Consultants in their fields of specialized knowledge. Many are working out of their homes. The problem for them (and myself) is that when there are meetings with clients and colleagues, their home office is not quite ‘professional ‘ enough. And you can’t always arrange to meet on the client’s site; besides, it’s sometimes not ‘neutral’ enough to create the right atmosphere. At present I use a corporate service center. It’s my second location, and is closer to OOS than my previous one in Nepean.....which was not too convenient. The idea is that if there are indeed a sufficient number of us, with similar needs for flexibly-available professional space, we may be able to create something with a commercial provider in the OOS area. ..probably somewhere along Bank Street. There would be meeting, interview, group-work rooms of different size, with whyteboards / Powerpoint screens etc etc, central office services, hi- speed internet access, phone, mail boxes and corporate ID type mailing address, other office equipment etc etc. User fees on a per hr. or half-day basis Send your comments to oscar@oldottawasouth.ca or drop them off at the Firehall, 260 Sunnyside Avenue. Remember our children are back at school. Please drive carefully! f etc. would then be applied, in addition to a sort of retainer or ‘membership’ type of annual fee. Higher user fees could be charged to those who don’t want to put down a ‘retainer’; these users would also have a lower priority on booking space. There would also be opportunities to develop some degree of colleagueship, as well as for doing some joint ‘businessdevelopment’ . On the other side of this, unless it were to start up as a cooperative, it could be a business-opportunity for someone ....maybe even someone who is already running a business like this somewhere else in the City. My guess is that if it’s built, and it’s good, ‘they’ will come....just like “Carmen’s Verandah”. OOS really needed at least one small high quality resto, and now we have one... with our very own inresidence Chef/Owner. So I’m looking to see if my intuition about an OOS based business/professional services center might be right. The OSCAR - OUR 31 st YEAR Dear Editor We recently received a letter from Clive Doucet, Councillor for our ward, City of Ottawa. I quote from his letter, “After reviewing the current supply of parking against the observed uses, it is felt that it would be to the business and residential communities best interest if parking meters were installed in this area.” [This is the response letter sent] Dear Mr. Doucet: We wish to respond to your letter of September 16, 2005 with respect to the institution of parking meters in our area. Our location already has parking restrictions at peak traffic times when cars cannot park on Bank Street. The addition of meters is yet another deterrence to keep consumers away from this area. The city is driving the consumer away from small business in the central core, out to large box stores in the suburbs. From the residential perspective, Received your letter regarding changes to Ottawa South Parking. Why would city council take away the only positive advantage businesses are left with in Ottawa South? It appears that city council has a short memory span. You took away garbage collection not long ago leaving the streets in our area with garbage all week long. Secondly, as residents and businesses alike well know , there is no regular street cleaning done in our area. It is left to businesses like mine to clean in front of our own stores. And thirdly, there has never been any steady monitoring of the problem at Hopewell School Page 3 Parking Meters on Bank Street Dear Mr. Doucet: this will increase traffic on side streets as vehicles look for parking away from the meters. Also, if small business continues to be squeezed by the City, how can we afford to support our local schools, churches, etc., when they look to our business and others for their fund raising? Last year small business became responsible for the cost of their garbage removal. In the past year, two long-term businesses (over 20 years each) within a block from our location, have closed their doors. How can it possibly be in the best interests of the business and residential community to install parking meters on Bank Street? Sounds like it may be in the best interests of the City only -- yet another cash grab that can only have a negative effect on small business! As a tax payer, I am getting a little tired of the endless money grabs by the present administration and for what? Less service.
