At Brewer Park preparation
has begun for the October
6 Build Day during which
a new accessible play structure will
be constructed. The first step was
the removal in early September of
the spring riders and the old wood
play structure. The spring riders will
be stored until they can be put back;
the play structures will be taken
apart and useable pieces recycled.
The removal of the structure was
followed by the removal of much
of the sand. A gravel base was laid,
and over that a concrete slab will
be poured. Green rubberized panels
will be glued to the concrete after
the new play structure is installed.
The remainder of the play area,
including the existing small play
structure, will have its sand replaced
with wood fiber. In this wood fiber
the spring riders will be reinstalled
later this fall. Those interested in
what the new play structure will
look like can see a poster of it at
the Firehall in the lobby or at the
Sunnyside Library as you leave.
Preparations for the Thursday
October 6 Build Day should
start early that week. A tractortrailer
will be parked and used for
storage, there will be at least one
construction waist bin, there will
be a large generator which will
only be used on to build day and
Oops! - Did we do that?
the Canadian forces are providing
a number of large tents. October
4 and 5 will see preparations at
the park with smaller groups of
volunteers. Over 100 volunteers are
expected to converge on the park for
the Thursday, October 6 Build Day.
As well as constructing the play
structure, volunteers are expected
to build a number of picnic tables,
and to do some painting on the
asphalt. The painting will include a
large world map and a number of
children’s games such as hopscotch.
The work will be an all day effort
with food and drink provided for
ECOS
By Mike Lascelles
ECOS Co-Chair
The Environment Committee
of Old Ottawa South, ECOS,
is involved in three green
projects. First, we are working
with staff and students of the
Environmental Science Institute
at Carleton University, Ontario
Ministry of Natural Resources
biologists, and City of Ottawa
officials on plans to improve the fish
habitat in Brewer Pond next year.
We intend to stage an open house
on these plans early in 2006 so that
we can listen to your views and
the volunteers. The project is a joint
effort of seven area Rotary Clubs
and KaBOOM, a not for profit
playground building organization.
There is still an opportunity to
volunteer to work on the day itself.
Anyone in the community who
is interested in getting involved
can contact Brendan McCoy, an
OSCA Board member, who is the
community representative on this
project.
He can be contacted at 730-
4979, or at brendan_mccoy@
hotmail.com .
preferences. Second, as part of the
OSCA committee developing plans
to renovate and green the Firehall,
ECOS is promoting ways to make
the building more energy efficient.
Third, we continue to support Gary
Lum and his Old Ottawa South Park
Renewal Committee in their plans to
do maintenance work and planting
in Linda Thom and Windsor parks
as well as along the river’s edge
farther east.
If you want to learn more about
Gary’s plans for this fall and the
spring of 2006, please read his
article in this issue of OSCAR.
