What’s going on at Southside
Happy children at Southside preschool program
The fall is always a busy time at
Southside, with the children adjusting
to their new routines, getting to know
each other and making new friends. The
Southside teachers have also been doing
their best to ease the transitions that come
with this time of year with fun, interesting
and varied programming.
Southside preschool program
The Southside preschool program began the
year with a unit on bears, including learning
about hibernation, exploring a “bear cave,”
and participating in a Teddy Bears’ picnic
complete with a porridge snack. In October,
they will explore the season with songs and
poems about fall and Thanksgiving, and
sensory bins with leaves. Upcoming events
include the dinosaur unit in November and
Christmas in December.
Bytown kinders program
In the Bytown kinders program, the children
have been having a lot of fun with themes
including “Back to School,” “Me and My
Family” and the fall season. In October,
their focus will change to the harvest, apples,
Thanksgiving and Hallowe’en, always a
spooky favourite! Themes in November and
December include fairy tales, dinosaurs,
Christmas and Hanukah.
Throughout the year, the children will also
enjoy special activities, including music and
movement, hip hop, a visit from children’s
musician Russell Levia, an interactive
session with Little Ray’s Reptiles, a play
at Carleton University and visits with the
senior citizens at the Colonel By Residence.
After-school recreation program
The after-school recreation program is
also in full swing, with the children doing
beading, origami and baking brownies.
They’ve also been having a blast with the
karaoke machine, and playing badminton
and volleyball.
