Page 6 The OSCAR - OUR 31 st YEAR OCTOBER 2005 The Return of Goat Bingo….a.k.a….Fall Fest By Brenda Lee Yes, the rumours are true and Fall Fest, that beloved and clearly missed Osca festival, will be returning on Sat. Oct. 22 nd from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. So get out your best preserves, pies, pumpkin-carving skills and of course ability to guess which square is the lucky one for goat bingo and head on down to Windsor Park. This year will offer a variety of activities, some familiar and some completely new to the event. The BBQ will begin at 11:30 a.m. and end when we run out of food. We will be selling pumpkins and offering up the opportunity to carve them for Halloween with our “professional carvers”. Pony Rides of course are always a must have for any Fall event and ours is no exception, so grab your cowboy hats and join the other cowpokes on the wildest ponies this side of Arnprior. Games will be on hand for all the kids as well, with an interesting variation this year. Everyone who plays a game will get a small prize and a ticket to enter the many draws for larger prizes. We are hoping to get a collection of used toys from the community to offer up as these larger prizes. If you have any GENTLY USED toys or games that you would like to offer up please drop them at the Firehall to Deirdre McQuillan on Tues, Wed, or Thurs. or call Brenda Lee at 733 0608 or Michelle Terris at 526 2328 to arrange an alternative drop off. For the adults we have the traditional hay bale toss on hand…. don’t forget to take a few Advil before you try the toss!! It is much harder than it looks! We sent the last winner home with scraped knees and a very sore back…but hey we aren’t totally unsympathetic…we threw in some A535 with his prize. We will also be having our first annual preserve contest…anyone wishing to bring preserves, jams, jellies, pickles etc. please have them labeled with your name on the bottom and have them at the park by 1.p.m. when the judging will begin. We also are pleased to offer up tables for anyone wishing OSCA (Old Ottawa South Community Association) ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Tuesday, November 1, 2005 7:30 PM at the Firehall 260 Sunnyside Avenue Wine and Cheese - everyone welcome Call 247-4872 for more information to sell their preserves, please call Brenda or Michelle if you will need a table. Our Pie contest will be held again this year, and the judging will begin at 12:30 p.m. Please again have all pies labeled with names on the bottom and have them there before judging begins. Last but not least is a new addition in the contest portion of our fest that we hope to see a huge response to….with a deferential come and see what the heck goat bingo is... you will not be disappointed nod to the Winter Carnival and it’s chili,… we introduce the Fall Fest Soup and Stew contest. We invite everyone in the neighbourhood to bring out a pot of their best soups and stews. Let’s see if we can match the Winter Carnival with 17 pots! Again please label your pot clearly. All of the contests will have wonderful prizes for the winners…wait and see! Hortus Urbanus will be on hand to give advice on the best bulb planting techniques and will have a table of bulbs for those wishing to purchase any. As an aside, with a totally unsolicited bit of The OSCA Program Committee (OPC) welcomed its new members at an orientation meeting on September 19th. Pictured above are: Lorraine Cornelius, Camps and Breaks Lead, Michael Pranschke, Youth Lead, Brenda Lee, Preschool Program Lead, Amy Bell, Adult Program Lead, Gauri Sreenivasan, Member-at-large and Dianne Borg, chairperson. Ann Vachon, Marketing and Communications Lead was absent. These new program area Leads will join the other members of OPC, Cathie and Dinos, in working advertising, the Hortus Urbanus bulbs are the only ones that consistently come up in my garden each year and I swear by them. Once again we have been lucky enough to have successfully convinced Voodoo Sanchez to play for a set at the event. There is talk of them perhaps having a gig at a local bar that evening…. but Mark probably needs a bit of encouragment…so you know what to do!! And yes…here it is…..GOAT BINGO will return. For those of you confused …not sure if goat bingo is a misprint….. is it like dogs playing poker??……well…. I had it written out and then I just erased it…come and see what the heck goat bingo is….you will not be disappointed!! You may still be confused and maybe even a little bit repulsed…but not disappointed. Fall is my favourite time of year and now this year even more so. I have missed the Fall Fest and I know I am not alone….it is exciting for Michelle, Anne Marie, Deirdre and myself to be a part of it’s return. We will see you all at Windsor Park! Program Committee Welcomes New Members By Amy Bell l to r - Diane Borg, Michael Pranscjke, Brenda Lee, Amy Bell, Gauri Sreeniman, Lorraine Cornelius to renew programming at the Firehall. There is room for more volunteers if you are interested in joining this dynamic group. Meetings are held about 8 times per year. Part of their job is to network within the community to find out what’s working and how programming at the Firehall can be improved, so please let them know your ideas and suggestions. OCTOBER 2005 CITY COUNCILLOR’S REPORT Environmental Plans Dear OSCAR Readers, In the beginning, there was the word. The aboriginal peoples are right. We name and sing our lives into existence. We understand God by naming things. (from Soul Stones) The environment is on people’s minds. At the last two “Coffee with Clive” sessions at the Second Cup in Old Ottawa South, I have had two different people show up with concerns about the environment. The first was a doctor from the College of Physicians and Surgeons who was really concerned with the need for an integrated environmental plan to reduce pollution and global warming. When he looked at it from his perspective he saw a lot of individual efforts in different areas but what really worried him was the lack of any integration or common front among the national, provincial and local levels of government. Another gentleman from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency talked about the problem of food supply with gasoline doubling and tripling in cost. He pointed out that for every calorie of food you eat it takes 10 calories of energy mostly from fossil fuels to produce that food, in a way that didn’t exist 40 years ago. Petroleum products are essential ingredients in pesticides and herbicides. Natural gas byproducts are used in fertilizers. Diesel or gas runs the machines that plant and harvest as well as transport food across the continent. His point was that it is not sustainable in the future. We will not be able to import most of our food from so far away. We will need to produce more food locally yet local agricultural land is being lost to sprawl development. Both these men struck a cord with me because I remember Ottawa 40 years ago when the city was roughly half the size it is now and when the bulk of available food (vegetables, dairy products and meat) was largely local. Both these men were worried about the trends and where the city is going. I share their concern because I see this problem everyday at the city. We have no environmental implementation branch and no implementation capacity. How can we properly evaluate transportation alternatives if we don’t understand their environmental impact. For example, what are the implications for local asthma patients from local pollution? We have no senior environmental professionals to advise the city’s medical officer on disease implications. These things are not easy to resolve. You could own Bank Street and Laurier Avenue. These and many more Ottawa street name signs are once again available for sale to the public. With the renaming of a number of streets to avoid duplication, many street names from former municipalities have been removed from service. Signs that have been The OSCAR - OUR 31 st YEAR replaced for normal maintenance reasons are also available for purchase. These decommissioned signs can be purchased for $10 each. A list of available signs and information on how to purchase them can be found in the transportation section of the City’s Web site at ottawa.ca. They require us to rethink the “tried and true” methods of growing our city which are giving us sprawl and big box stores. In the end we may need a moratorium on road building and to invest in electric light rail powered locally from the Chaudiere Falls. Remember how a couple of years ago a brownout in Michigan took out our entire electrical system? No matter what happens internationally we should be able to supply our basic food and energy needs. It isn’t easy to change. Even changing sidewalks for the better is difficult. Our old roller coaster (up, down and tilted at each driveway) sidewalks kept people confined for weeks on end last winter. We have a new sidewalk design that provides a continuous flat surface and a slightly steeper ramp on the outside edge to shed water and ice better. Evidence on Holland and Delaware from last winter is that these new sidewalks are safer and easier to maintain. There is a big difference between setting planning goals and making them a reality. Big box stores surrounded by asphalt are cheap and quick in the short term but have high compound maintenance costs. Traditional main streets cost less in the long term but are a hard sell in the short run. The question is how do we get elected officials, city staff and the Page 7 public thinking long term. Maybe the gift of New Orleans to the rest of North America will be the realization that the cost of draining wetlands and paving them over creates an environment which has no natural defenses against weather events. This is an environment in which ordinary people eventually pay a huge price. I will be putting forward a proposal for an Environmental Implementation Branch (EIB), which will report to the City’s Medical Officer. It will be an important first step in making change happen in Ottawa. Old Ottawa South Concerns Earlier in the summer I contacted the Mayor and the City Manager to give them advance notice about Capital Ward’s top 4 budget priorities for 2006 and the renovation of Firehall Community Centre was top of the list. My office has received inquiries about the status of the proposed morning right hand turn prohibitions off Bronson and I will only be supporting the turn prohibitions when they come to committee if they apply to Sunnyside as well as the proposed streets in the Glebe.
