EAR SHAPING
Humans have shaped dogs’ ears for centuries. Certain breeds of dogs require, in
order to conform to breed standards, cropped ears such as Great Danes, American
Pit Bull Terriers, Boxers,
Doberman Pincers, Miniature
Pincers, and Schnauzers. A
veterinarian normally crops
the ears a few weeks after
the puppy’s birth. Although
veterinarians did not provide
pain medication for years, and
some still do not, it is much
more common today, and
some veterinarians refuse to
crop ears altogether. On the
other hand, some breeders
and dog owners continue
to perform these surgeries
themselves, without anesthesia,
which can result in infection
and blood loss, not to mention
considerable pain. Because of
these concerns, a number of
localities have now banned or
restricted the procedure.
In the contemporary body
modification scene, human
ears are also the focus of
shaping and modification. For

of the ear via the removal of
part of the cartilage (and sometimes the sewing up of the resultant ear), in order

Some people also choose to have their earlobes removed for aesthetic reasons or
to remove a stretched earlobe. Because most surgeons will not crop human ears,
most people who seek to have their ears shaped turn to cutters, piercers, and
sometimes will do the procedure themselves.
