This monthsees the birthdays of Pat Boone 1st 1934with hits of ‘Wonderful Time Up There’,‘April Love’, and on 9th 1934 its JackieWilson with ‘Reet Petite’, ‘Lonely Teardrops’,good classics and you will probablyhear their tracks being played by the dj orlive band covering one or all of their hits atany Rock ‘n’ Roll event that you go to.In the 1970’s ‘The Darts’ did just that bydoing a re-make of ‘Reet Petite’, The Dartsnow regrouping and about to go on tour, socheck out the dates they could be playingnear you. ‘Darts’ hit the charts in the 70’swith competition from Showaddywaddy,Mud, Rocky Sharp and the Replays andMatchbox. ‘The Darts’ were a 9 strong energeticentertaining doo woop group hittingthe charts in 77’ with ‘Daddy Cool’/The GirlCan’t Help It’ mix. The group was the brainchild of ex Rocky Sharp bass player DenHagarty, who in 1976 pulled together otherformer Sharp members vocalist Griff Fender,Rita Ray, Horatio Hornblower, ThumpThompson, John Drummer, George Currie,Hammy Howell and Bob Fish. Darts beganplaying pubs, clubs and the university circuitswhere they soon build up a large following.Their unique style of doo wop Rock‘n’ Roll and of course their stage act hadthem as one of the top acts around, soontheir reputation got around and the breakcame when they appeared on BBC radioLondon in October 1976. The group soongot a record deal with <strong>Mag</strong>net and their firstrelease hit the top 10 in 1977, other hitsfollowed ‘Come back My Love’, ‘Boy FromNew York City’, ‘It’s Raining’......Then in 1979 Den Hagarty left and Dartsseemed to loose their sparkle. In 1980 adispute with <strong>Mag</strong>net records, resulting in arestraint on the release of any new material,so the band toured the USA for a fewyears and coming back to the UK in 83’and began a new tour appearing in theatresin ‘Yakey Yak’, the show mostly stayingin the West End of London.....Now ‘Darts’ are back with the legendaryDen Hagarty, the guy with the bulgingeyes!! And the band of course are touring.This month on the 7th in Coventry wehave ‘The Spitfires’ (0247 6336533) onthe 14th in Surrey it’s ‘Class of 58’ (01483856744 on the 20th we have a RecordHop at Taunton R ‘n’ R Club and on the28th in Cleveland we have ‘The RhythmBoys’. The 27th June Basingstoke R ‘n’ Rclub have ‘Bernie Woods & The ForestFires’ (01256 462305). From the 19th -23rd at Pontins Camber Sands, East Sussexis ‘The Rockabilly Rave’ (01435812508) with bands like ‘The Rockin 8Balls’ from Finland, ‘Lew Williams’ fromUSA, ‘Ronnie Bonnie’ from Italy, ‘JackRabbit Slim’ from the UK and many more,boy what a line up!!
