Humanism affirms that we can lead good liveswithout recourse to religion or superstitionIn the Humanist life-stance, the Golden Rule is <strong>of</strong>ten simply expressed as :“Treat others as you would wish to be treated”It is not enough to love; we need also to be loved. Even to be loved is not enough; we need tobe loved as we are, for ourselves, <strong>in</strong> ways that br<strong>in</strong>g us joy. It is not sufficient to give; we needthe joy <strong>of</strong> giv<strong>in</strong>g, giv<strong>in</strong>g to someone who receives with gladness and warmth. How wonderfuldoes life become when all these needs are met!Humanists base their moral pr<strong>in</strong>ciples on a rational approach to life, under-p<strong>in</strong>ned by sharedhuman values and respect for others, aimed at improv<strong>in</strong>g the quality <strong>of</strong> life, mak<strong>in</strong>g it moreequitable for all. For Humanists, it is important to make our one life as worthwhile and happyas possible for everyone.Humanism focuses on human be<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>of</strong>fers an ethical approach to life and affirms confidence<strong>in</strong> humanity’s ability to solve problems, recognis<strong>in</strong>g that much <strong>of</strong> what happens <strong>in</strong> our worldis what people cause to happen. To this end, humanists aim to co-operate with people <strong>of</strong> allfaiths and none, to achieve a car<strong>in</strong>g free society, but deplore any religious adherence thatharms or disadvantages others.Humanists assert that morality comes from our ability to see that there is general benefit whenwe behave well towards each other; an ability that is enhanced by personal responsibility, acar<strong>in</strong>g and pr<strong>in</strong>cipled upbr<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g and education that always <strong>in</strong>sists that we treat others withconsideration and unselfishness.Humanism provides a moral framework for a life free from superstition and supernaturalbeliefs, and holds that this life is the only one we have. Although Humanists robustlyquestion the idea <strong>of</strong> any god or other power controll<strong>in</strong>g our physical world, Humanism is morethan just a simple denial <strong>of</strong> religious belief. Human rights law is important to all Humanistorganisations throughout the world and they endorse the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>of</strong> humanitarian ideals thatare enshr<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> all such declarations, covenants and conventions, as well as the universal<strong>in</strong>itiatives promoted by the United Nations for the peaceful co-habitation <strong>of</strong> all the world’spopulations.
