CHARITYNot only is charitable giv<strong>in</strong>g one <strong>of</strong> the pillars <strong>of</strong> Islam, but additional giv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> charity is alsoencouraged as can be seen <strong>in</strong> the two quotations from the Qur’an listed above. A furtherQuranic verse and a hadith, which also show this, are:The Believers are those who spend freely out <strong>of</strong> the gifts We have bestowed on them forsustenance. [8:4]Allah sends two angels to every servant <strong>of</strong> His, and the angel says, O, Allah, reward thosewho spend their wealth for Your sake; and the other says, O Allah, punish those who arest<strong>in</strong>gy [Hadith]JUSTICEAs can be seen from the follow<strong>in</strong>g verses, justice is an important concept <strong>in</strong> IslamNo bearer <strong>of</strong> burdens shall bear the burden <strong>of</strong> another: nor would We visit with Our Wrath untilWe had sent a messenger with warn<strong>in</strong>g [17.15]O you who believe! stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allah, even as aga<strong>in</strong>styourselves, or your parents, or your k<strong>in</strong>, and whether it be rich or poor: for Allah can bestprotect both. Follow not your lusts lest you swerve, and if you distort justice or decl<strong>in</strong>e to dojustice, verily Allah is well acqua<strong>in</strong>ted with all that ye do. [4.135]O believers, be you securers <strong>of</strong> justice and witness for God. Let not your dislike <strong>of</strong> somepeople move you to act <strong>in</strong>equitably; act justly, that is nearer to piety and God- consciousness.[5:8]And give full measure when you measure out, and weigh with a true balance; this is fairand better <strong>in</strong> the end [17:35]EQUALITY AND HUMAN RIGHTSMuslims believe that all people are equal– the only th<strong>in</strong>g which should dist<strong>in</strong>guishthem from each other is their piety.O mank<strong>in</strong>d! We created you from a male and female, and made you <strong>in</strong>to nations and tribes,so that you may come to know one another. Truly, the most honoured <strong>of</strong> you <strong>in</strong> God’s sight isthe greatest <strong>of</strong> you <strong>in</strong> piety. [49:13].Whoever does good, whether male or female, and is a believer, will enter Paradise [40:39]All mank<strong>in</strong>d is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor anon-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a blacknor does a black have any superiority over a white except by piety and good actions.[Hadith].54
