“How about ‘shu’: never impose on others what you would not choose for yourself?”The word shu means reciprocity – “The practice <strong>of</strong> exchang<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>in</strong>gs with others for mutualbenefit” [Oxford English Dictionary]. This <strong>in</strong>struction can be found <strong>in</strong> all major religions andpositive philosophies, and, as will be seen <strong>in</strong> the follow<strong>in</strong>g chapter, can form the basis for a“Global Ethic:”“The basis for such a Global Ethic has not to be created, for it already exists. There are corevalues and moral <strong>in</strong>sights which are held <strong>in</strong> common across the different philosophical andreligious traditions despite the variety and diversity <strong>of</strong> beliefs and practices.” 1The document was launched at a Roundtable event <strong>in</strong> Glasgow March 2009 by Fergus Ew<strong>in</strong>g,MSP, M<strong>in</strong>ister for Community Safety.
