D-6 What is the quantitative relationship between investment ininfrastructure and the achievement of adoption goals?66.5.2 Research Node D.2: Motivating Process UseWe have swept into this node most of the fundamental questions relatedto adoption because absent their answers we cannot hope to addressthe questions of how to motivate a change in what we do every day ina software engineering organization. We are particularly cognizant thatwe have to keep the unit of analysis (organizations) in mind as we propoundour questions, as there is already an abundance of work at, say,the individual (psychological) level. It is well settled that the psychologicallevel does not scale to the collective, so we have to be carefulto formulate appropriate questions and be attentive to the sources andmethods we use to answer them.Research questions associated with this node includeD-7 How do organizations work (in the ways relevant to adoption)?D-8 How do organizations change and improve?D-9 Assuming there is more than one answer to the first question andto the second, how do we map the ways in which organizationswork to the ways in which they change?D-10 How do we estimate the resources and duration needed to makeplanned change?D-11 Is there a way to assess the degree to which an organization isready to make a change to an extent we specify, both in depth andrate (how much, how soon)?D-12 What is the best way to characterize the environment of theorganization that is relevant to understanding and tailoring thedeployment?D-13 Is there a difference in deploying process vs. product?D-14 What is the best way to align and increase the motivationand ability of personnel to adopt new processes? In fact, whatmotivates change for each type of change target? For example, arebusiness cases relevant?D-15 What is the best way to plan the tailoring of the new processes inlight of the answers to all of the questions above? To tailoring theorganization?IPRC Framework | Theme D 59
