Q & A With Matt Campbellus. If you would have asked me about the offensive lineat this time last year, there were some question marks.We thought our top five guys would be good but wewere worried about our depth. Right now I think weare as good and as deep as we’ve ever been across ouroffensive front.You can start with our All-MAC lineman, (seniorcenter) Zac Kerin and (junior guard) Greg Mancz. Zacmight be as good a center as there is in the country. Hedeserves to be talked about like that. Greg Mancz is alsoone of the best offensive linemen in our conference.And then we have our other two returning starters,(junior guard) Jeff Myers and (sophomore tackle) JoshHendershot, who were very solid for us on the left sideof the line last year.We will have a good battle for the right tackle spot.Right now the leading candidates are (junior) ChaseNelson and (junior) Rob Lisowski. Chase has had a greatoff-season. We are looking forward to seeing him gothrough a full 15 practices this spring. Rob saw the mostplaying time last year of any of our reserves. When hehad an opportunity to play, Rob did a lot of good thingsfor us.We have some young players who redshirtedas freshmen last year that we are excited to see thisspring. James Henry and Storm Norton are big tackleswho have had good off-seasons. We are very eager tosee them develop. Paul Pershon and Ray Marlowe areguards who are in a position to compete for playingtime. And Colin Perchinske is a sophomore can playeither guard or tackle.How about at tight end?Campbell: There is great competition at tight end.Our top returner is (sophomore) Alex Zmolik, who wasabout as productive as any freshman we had last year.He’s a fine pass-catcher and blocker. Inside the boxhe’s a tough kid. Backing him up is (redshirt freshman)Craig Runyan. He had to sit our last year with a shoulderinjury but we’re glad to have him back and excited tosee what he can do. (Redshirt freshman) Mike Ebert isanother young guy who got hurt in fall camp last yearbut was able to come back and start practicing againin the bowl season.I’d like to also mention (junior) Zac Rosenbauer,who plays the fullback/H-Back spot in our offense. Zacwas very effective in that role last year and proved hebelonged on the field in critical situations. Backing upZac is (junior) Dawalyn Harper who is now full-time onthe offensive side of the ball.At wide receiver you have a great one, seniorBernard Reedy.Campbell: It’s been great to see Bernard’s developmentsince his freshman season. A year ago everybody wasasking how we would replace Eric Page. We neverthought too much about it because we knew we hadBernard. He’s one of those guys who practices just ashard as he plays. He’s a leader; he brings it every day.(Sophomore) Alonzo Russell had a big freshman season.He has big-play ability. Now he needs to take the nextstep and add consistency to his game. If he can do thathe has a chance to be a very special football player. Ourthird returning starter, (junior) Justin Olack, is comingoff shoulder surgery, so he will be limited this spring. Wereally felt like he played his best football at the end oflast season. He could have a break-out season for us.(Junior) Dwight Macon will continue to split timeat wide receiver and quarterback. Dwight is verytalented and can do a lot of things on the football field.(Sophomore) Zach Rogers has also shown us flashesthat he can be a great football player. And then there’sJames Green, who’s a senior now and has really workedhard this off-season.The running back position looks strong, too.Campbell: (Senior) David Fluellen is healthy and looksgreat. He’s established himself as a premier runningback, really one of the best in the country. We’re reallyexcited to see how (junior) Cassius McDowell develops.He gives us that quick, speedy back to complementDavid. Another guy who could have played as a truefreshman last year but we decided to redshirt him isDamian Jones-Moore. We are excited about his futurein the program. Another redshirt freshman back thereis (redshirt freshman) Marc Remy. Marc has playedreceiver and running back, but we’re going to starthim at running back this spring. He’s much strongernow; he’s added about 10 to 15 pounds and has greatpotential.
Q & A With Matt CampbellYour situation at quarterback is different comparedto the last couple of seasons. Instead of two relativelyequal players battling for playing time, you have aclear leader, senior Terrance Owens.Campbell: Yes, it’s a little different. We have onequarterback, (senior) Terrance Owens, who took about80 percent of the snaps last year. He’s a veteran and itshows. He’s more comfortable now as a leader on thisteam. It’s a huge spring for him. We can put a lot moreof the offense in his hands and let him run with it. He’sa fifth-year senior now and has a right to claim thestarting position.The interesting thing to watch will be thedevelopment of our young quarterbacks. (Junior)Dwight Macon will continue to play some of the timeat quarterback this spring. He’s a great athlete, but healso has a terrific arm. Behind him is (redshirt freshman)Brian Blackburn. Brian is a big guy who can throw andrun.And finally, we have a true freshman, LoganWoodside, who graduated high school early and is withour program now. This is the first time we’ve had a highschool player graduate early and enter our program. Ithas been a great benefit to him. He has had a chance togain some experience. We’ll see where he stands afterthe 15 spring practices.Will Owens benefit by knowing he is the startingquarterback instead of battling for his job like hedid the past three years?Campbell: The challenge never really leaves. I think theyoung quarterbacks in our program will challenge him.But Terrance is not bothered by competition. He’s nevershaken. His demeanor was always the same whetherhe was the starter or whether he came off the bench.Terrance was one of our most consistent players lastyear, and I don’t see that changing. If everybody on ourteam matches his level of consistency, that would be agreat benefit for us. Not only do I think Terrance is oneof the better quarterbacks in our conference, I believehe is one of the better quarterbacks in the country. Hisgoal is to win a MAC championship. That’s the one goalhe wants to accomplish in his college career.Special teams was greatly improved in 2012. I knowthat was an area of priority for you. How do youassess special teams going into next year?Campbell: We improved immensely on special teamslast year. Credit goes to (special team coach) StanWatson, and a lot of credit goes to our key guys on ourspecial teams. (Senior punter) Vince Penza made greatstrides last year. We found a system that fits what hedoes. He does a great job of getting the football wherehe wants it to go. With (junior) J.D. Detmer, we have oneof the best kickers in the country, in my opinion. He’sgot a great leg and is deadly accurate. He was good asa freshman but added consistency to his game. Thesilent leader on special teams is (senior) long snapperMatt Wall. I don’t think there is a more consistent longsnapper in the country.You can’t do much better at kickoff and punt returnthan Bernard Reedy.Campbell: Bernard Reedy makes our kicking game sodangerous. He can score at any time, whether it’s onkickoff returns or punt returns. I’d also like to mentionwhat a lift we will get on our special teams with thereturn of (sophomore) Kishon Wilcher. Kishon was oneof our top tacklers on the kick team in 2011 and we reallymissed him last year. We really like (redshirt freshman)D.J. Larkins as a special teams player, too. Both he andKishon could be returning kicks this year, too.Okay, let’s talk about the schedule. Every year wesay, “This is the toughest schedule we’ve ever had.”But this really is Toledo’s toughest schedule ever,isn’t it? I mean, how many schools this year can saytheir first two games will be against SEC opponents?And Navy and Eastern Washington are no slouches.Plus, you open the MAC with two road games.Campbell: It is the toughest schedule, no doubt aboutit. But we don’t talk much about, to be honest. We justfocus on ourselves and the process it takes to get better.We don’t control the schedule. The only thing we cancontrol is us. Our players will be excited to play schoolslike Florida and Missouri. But at the end of the day, weneed to work at getting better so that we can win aMAC Championship. To do that, we better be ready tocome and play week-in and week-out, no matter whowe are playing.
