Head Coach Matt CampbellSo much has happened in Matt Campbell’s coachingcareer that it is hard to believe he is just 33 yearsold.Campbell was named head coach for the ToledoRockets on Dec. 12, 2011, becoming the 26th headfootball coach in school history and the youngesthead coach in the NCAADivision I FBS at the timeby more than three years.Just 16 days after takingover the helm, Campbellled his Rockets to a 42-41 victory over Air Force inthe 2011 Military Bowl. Itwas only the latest chapterin his meteoric rise thatbegan just a decade ago.In his first full seasonas head coach of the Rockets,Campbell has led histeam to a 9-4 record anda trip to the Famous IdahoPotato Bowl. The Rocketswon eight straight gamesat one point in the season,vaulting to as high as No.23 in the nation in the APpoll.Making an Impact as anAssistantFollowing a stellarplaying career at MountUnion that included threenational titles, Campbellreturned to his alma mater in 2005, serving as offensivecoordinator/offensive line coach at the age of 25.Once again, the Purple Raiders won the NCAA DivisionIII title.Campbell then moved on to Bowling Green,where he had previously served as a graduate assistant.He coached the offensive line for two seasonsunder Gregg Brandon before being promoted to rungamecoordinator in 2008.Campbell then joined the Rocket staff as the offensivecoordinator under head coach Tim Beckman.At age 29, Campbell was the second-youngest coordinatorin the NCAA Division I FBS, but that didn’t stophim from molding the Rockets into one of the highestscoring offenses in the country.In 2009, Campbellhelped guide UT to theNo. 16-ranked offense inthe country (437.9 yardsper game) despite losingsenior quarterbackAaron Opelt to injury.A year later, the Rocketswent 8-5 and theirfirst bowl appearance infive years thanks to anoffense that ranked No.3 in the Mid-AmericanConference.In 2011, Campbell’s offenseranked No. 8 nationallyand first in theMAC in scoring offense(42.2), and 10th in thecountry and No. 1 inthe MAC in total offense(481.3). An outstanding high schoolfootball player, Campbell played college football atMount Union, just a short drive from his home.Campbell thrived under legendary coach LarryKehres, twice earning first-team All-America and OhioAthletic Conference defensive lineman of the yearhonors. Better still, Campbell was a vital part of threeconsecutive NCAA Division III national titles (2000,2001, 2002). During his career at Mount Union, he had207 tackles, 49 tackles for loss and 22 sacks. Campbellalso excelled in the classroom, earning CoSIDA AcademicAll-America honors and graduating in 2002.Learning the Coaching RopesCampbell began his coaching career as the offensivegraduate assistant at Bowling Green in 2003 and2004, working with the tight ends for teams that wonthe 2003 Motor City Bowl and 2004 GMAC Bowl. Hethen returned to his alma mater for the 2005 seasonas offensive coordinator/offensive line coach. In histwo seasons leading the Mount Union offense, Campbelland the Purple Raiders went 29-1 and won twoNCAA Division III national titles.In those two seasons at Mount Union, Campbellmentored six All-Americans on offense, including futureNFL star wide receiver Pierre Garcon.Campbell returned to Bowling Green as an assistantcoach for two seasons, one as the offensive linecoach (2007) and one as the offensive line coach/runninggame coordinator (2008). The 2007 Falcons went8-5 and earned a trip to the GMAC Bowl.Firing Up the Rocket OffenseThe next coaching stop for Campbell was a 20-minute drive up I-75 when Tim Beckman hired him tobecome Toledo’s offensive coordinator in 2009. Beckmanand Campbell coached together for one seasonat Bowling Green in 2004 when Beckman was an assistantand Campbell was a graduate assistant. Theyworked together to re-energize the Rocket offense.The results were immediate, as Toledo’s offense wasUT Athletic Director Mike O’Brien named Matt Campbell the 26th head football coach in the historyof the University of Toledo on Dec. 12, 2011 .
