NEWS FlashMESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPALJoseph A. WalerTogether we can do better.Dan Somrack, our newly elected Student Council president, announced this theme for the 2007-2008 school year when headdressed the student body during our Baccalaureate Liturgyin June. The theme succinctly reflects what we hope to accomplishand how we intend to do it. As a learning community, wecontinually strive to improve as we serve the needs of theyoung women and men who have been entrusted to our care. Our School Improvement Plan challenges us with robustgoals that focus on developing complex thinking skills andintegrating Catholic social teaching into our curriculum and, more importantly, into our students’ lives. We appreciate that the achievement of these and other goalsis only possible within the context of authentic community. To be true to our mission, a Catholic school such as oursmust be more than a collection of competing interests. Ourstrength must lie in a shared vision that will ignite a spirit ofenergy and pride to last a lifetime.Together we can do better. When you think about it, this themecaptures the original inspiration of Notre Dame-CathedralLatin School. When Notre Dame Academy and the CathedralLatin Alumni Association collaborated to found this school in1988, they did so because they realized that more could beaccomplished together than by any entity alone. That spirit of togetherness and shared purpose has onlydeepened with time. Today our students are hungry to learnabout our parent schools, their storied traditions, and theirheritage of excellence. They are eager to advance this legacyin their studies, their prayer, their athletic competition, theircommitment to service, and their involvement in dozens ofschool activities. As we begin another school year, we do so with realisticconfidence because we believe that together we can do better.Indeed, we already have.Sr. Kathleen Ryannamed 2007 Northeast OhioPeacemaker of the YearSr. Kathleen Ryan, SND, has been awardedthe 2007 Northeast Ohio Peacemaker of theYear. The Lion, affectionately named“PJ” by the students, was hard to pass up for theproud Cathedral Latin alumnus. “When the schoolhad the Lion up for auction to sponsor, how couldI pass it up? I joked that I was set up,” laughs Slick.“After I was introduced to the students at Mass, one young man waved his hands to be called on bythe principal. He proudly introduced himself as aformer lion from NDCL prior to moving to Texas,”Slick explains. “It’s a small world.”18 Seasons Summer 2007 Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin
