Meet NDCL’s New President:Sr. JacquelynGusdane Eager toShare NDCL’s VisionSr. Jacquelyn Gusdane haswitnessed many “seasons” atNotre Dame-Cathedral Latin:eight years as a youthful religion and social studies teacher atthe recently relocated Notre Dame Academy; six years as avibrant and loved principal at the same highly respected all-girlsAcademy; and in recent years, as a founding member of theBoard of Directors, helping todevelop a Strategic Plan thatwould position NDCL for adynamic future.Today, Sr. Jacquelyn welcomesher new role as president ofNotre Dame-Cathedral LatinSchool. She succeeds Sr.Margaret Gorman who willresume her studies at theGraduate Theological Unionin Berkeley, California.“My ‘yes’ to serving asPresident was much easierbecause of my involvementat NDCL over the past fewyears,” explains Sr. Jacquelyn.“There is so much energyhere, a feeling of excitementand joy. I am grateful to bepart of this moment inNDCL’s history.”Formerly featured in the fall 2005 issue of Seasons, Sr.Jacquelyn shared a bit of her history. The native Clevelandeast-sider received a Catholic education from elementarythrough graduate school. Her father, a graduate of CathedralLatin and mother, a Notre Dame Academy graduate, weremajor influences in her life, as were the Sisters of Notre Dame.Young Jacquelyn decided to dedicate her life to God at theage of 17. As Sr. Mary Evarista, she continued her educationas a Sister of Notre Dame, earning several advanced degreesand certificates in education, administration, theology andspirituality.“I have always felt drawn to both Catholic educationand spirituality, ultimately I love to learn and possess anunquenchable thirst for God. My varied ministerial experienceshave allowed me to share these ‘loves’ with so many peoplethrough the years,” reflects Sr. Jacquelyn, at NDCL this spring. She returns to the campus after three amazing months ofworking on strategic planning with the Sisters of Notre Dame inthe Patna and Bangalore Provinces. During this time in India, shehad the opportunity to visit schools staffed by the Sisters of NotreDame and share their life and ministries in the rural villages, tribal areas, mountain and coastal regions. As Sr Jacquelynrecounts these moments, her missionary heart shines through. While she valued immensely this international experience,Sr. Jacquelyn has a sense of “returning to her roots” as she walksthrough the halls and surveys the active, vibrant and scenic NDCLcampus. Talking about her new role, she smiles and gentlysays, “Wherever God has called me through the years, God hasconfirmed in me that ‘this is where I belong.’ These words ringtrue for the present moment at NDCL. My call in no waymatches the dramatic call of Moses, but I hear God bidding meas I drive onto this campus, ‘Take off your shoes. You are standingon holy ground. Go love my people with all your heart! Withthis school community, do whatever you can to make visiblemy reign in our world.’ For me, this personal invitation of ourGod evokes deep happiness, joy and fulfillment.”In the article titled, “A Fond Farewell,” published in thespring 2007 issue of SEASONS, the final line reads: “Sr.Margaret leaves NDCL poised for success well into the future.”Sr. Jacquelyn readily agrees. “This school is remarkable in somany ways: the leadership of the administration and faculty as2 Seasons Summer 2007 Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin
they eagerly interact with students, the felt-energy in thehallways at the change of classes, the evident commitment ofthe entire community to ‘a faith that does justice.’ Whatunbelievable and sturdy stepping stones to lead us into thefuture.”She continues, “There is no doubt that I not only love thisplace, but I share a firm and deep commitment with theentire school community to the mission and vision of NDCL.But, I must add, it is not the same place as it was when I beganteaching at NDA and it’s not meant to be! The rich heritageand shared values of the strong educational traditions of bothNotre Dame Academy and Cathedral Latin School united in1988 provide the solid foundation and impetus for our beingpoised for success as Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School.”One of Sr. Jacquelyn’s major goalsis to capture the energy of spirit shehas experienced and channel it intoa transformative capital campaignwhich will address the comprehensiveneeds of the school, both in its service to others.”facilities and in its endowment.“We enter into this phase of NDCL’s life with excitement, confidence, and hope,” she remarks with animation. “As weanticipate the ‘what is yet to be,’ we move forward into ourcapital campaign with the full support and approval of ourBoard of Directors, Board of Members and parents whoattended one of the leadership awareness programs in June. All these groups serve as an excellent barometer for a verysuccessful campaign. We launch this first phase of NDCL’slong-awaited capital campaign assured that our students, parents, and alumni affirm wholeheartedly the mission andvision of NDCL and want to see it endure for years to come.”A second important goal for Sr. Jacquelyn is the continuedimplementation of NDCL’s Strategic Plan in 2004. “Togetherwith Board of Directors and school community, we will bringto life those action steps that will keep moving us forward inlight of our mission and vision,” notes Sr. Jacquelyn.“Our aim is to prepare young men and women who will beleaders who will transform our world by their love and serviceto others. What greater mission could we have than to secure“Our aim is to prepare young men andwomen who will be leaders who willtransform our world by their love anda future where our students feel compelled to make this areality wherever they are? The rate of change in our worldtoday staggers most of us. On a 24/7 basis, our students areconstantly being swept into a global community, one whereall of us are called to be brothers and sisters to one another.Such a world demands young men and women with criticalthinking skills, with a strong belief in the dignity and worth ofevery human being, with a desire to share their gifts for theimprovement of humankind and most of all, with a commitmentto the person and message of Jesus Christ. Our place, yours and mine, is to accompany and challenge them on thisjourney,” continues Sr. Jacquelyn. No doubt, Sr. Jacquelyn enters the position of NDCLPresident running – already meeting with parents and alumni, spending a week meeting and enjoyingconversation with CL and NDAalumni on the east and west coastsof south Florida, attending the NDAAnsel Castle tour, Cathedral LatinCommunion Breakfast and CLAlumni Association Annual BoardMeeting, the preparatory meetingsfor the Capital Campaign, and withplans to join in the fun at the NDCLAnnual Golf Outing at Fowler’s MillGolf Course on July 20th.As her calendar fills with variousappointments and engagements, Sr.Jacquelyn says that it is for thetransformation of NDCL studentsthat she enters into the activities ofeach day.“One of my lasting hopes,” shesaid,” is that our students realize thepower within themselves to becomewhom they choose. Their faith inGod is the sustaining and anchoringreality. I want them to understand, however slowly it happens, theimportance and consequences ofgood, life choices. That’s a hard one!”Sr. Jacquelyn concludes, “One ofthe greatest gifts available to our students is the adult mentorsin this school community and their own parents whomodel the compassion and love of Jesus.”At the end of the interview, Sister Jacquelyn pulls a smallgreen card out of her wallet. It holds significant meaning forher and her love of teenagers. She explains that she has carriedit with her since 1983. The card contains the wordswhich Sister Ita Ford, MM, one of the martyred women of ElSalvador, wrote to her 16-year-old niece:“I hope you come to findthat which gives life a deep meaning for you.something worth living for – maybe even worth dying for–something that energizes you, enthuses you, enables you to keep moving ahead.I can’t tell you what it might be –that’s for you to find, to choose, to love.I can just encourage you to start looking, and support you in the search.”Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin Seasons Summer 2007 3
