And I think I’mtaking that with me. I’m going somewhere completely unexpected.”That unexpected place is the S.I. Newhouse School ofPublic Communication at Syracuse University in New York, where Kathleen plans to study the magazine field. One reason she chose NDCL was its facilities.“The art building was just outstanding, compared toother schools,” she notes.Another was the faculty. The spirit of staff such as English teacher Zita Knificimpressed her during a visit to NDCL.“She was so enthusiastic about what she did, it made meenthusiastic,” Kathleen remembers.Kathleen went on to make her own impression. The NHS member and First Honors student is among theacademic elite in her class, with a GPA beyond 4.0 and 13 of apossible 17 Honors and Advanced Placement classes underher belt. She is on the Wall of Distinction, in recognition ofliving out the school’s mission statement. Her activities included playing the clarinet in marchingband, pep band and musicals, as well as participating indrama, the Book of the Month Club, Art Club, Key Club, theMane Page, and as a Senior Buddy.Kathleen has also been active in Peer Ministry, MusicMinistry, in her church choir, and in the Fest Choir atBorromeo, where about 400 singers join together for a Massfor thousands and thousands of people. In addition, herpaintings and drawings have appeared in the school literarymagazine, Phantasm, and she took third place in a LakelandCommunity College poetry competition.Kathleen, the daughter of Dana and Antonia Corlett, has ayounger brother, Tim, who will be returning to NDCL this fallas a sophomore.Like so many students, there is no quickway to sum up the accomplishments ofMatt Drummond. For starters, Matt, who has the highestGPA of his class, is a National MeritCommended Student, has achieved FirstHonors all eight semesters, is on theschool’s Wall of Distinction, is in NHS, andearned exceptional scores on standardizedtests for college, including a 790 out of a possible 800 on themath section of the SAT.
