ESTIMATES OF TOTAL TRAVELFigure 2.1 and Table 2.2 show the distributionsof person miles of travel by trip purpose asreported through the travel day and travelperiod sections of the questionnaire. Almost80% of personal travel was reported in thetravel day (adjusted) section, which implies thatmost travel was comprised of trips less than 75miles long. Trips of 75 miles or more (one way)– that is, the travel period section – wereprimarily social/recreational trips. Although lessthan 13% of all person miles for going to workwere listed in the travel period section, over halfFIGURE 2.1of the person miles for work-related businesswere reported in the travel period section.The returning home category, added in the<strong>1995</strong> <strong>NPTS</strong> to assist in coding to-from trips,designates the purpose of returning to therespondent’s residence. Returning homerepresents about one-third of all travel day trippurposes.
