Multiple CompuScope SystemsThe CompuScope Windows drivers are designed to support a single CompuScope system. A singleCompuScope system is defined as one of the two following configurations:1. A single Master/Slave Multi-Card CompuScope System2. A system consisting of Multiple Independent single CompuScope cards.The CompuScope drivers do NOT support the simultaneous configuration and operation of MultipleSystems. So, for instance, the drivers do not support a computer equipped with a 2 board Master/SlaveCS8500 system AND a 4 board Master/Slave CS14100 system. Similarly, the drivers do not support acomputer equipped with a 6 board Master/Slave CS12100 system AND two independent CS82Gs.It is possible to equip a computer with multiple CompuScope systems and operate them at different timesduring different measurement sessions. This is possible using the CP5000ED.EXE CompuScopeEnable/Disable utility that is included with the CompuScope drivers. CP500ED.EXE can be used todisable a certain CompuScope model so that the drivers do not detect it.Suppose that a user had a computer equipped with a 4 board Master/Slave CS1602 system and a 2 boardindependent CS85Gs. For a low speed experiment, the user could run CP500ED.EXE to disable theCS85G model so that the drivers did not detect the two CS82Gs. The user could then operate the CS1602Master/Slave system, as usual. For a high-speed experiment, the user could run CP500ED.EXE anddisable the CS1602 model. The drivers would then not detect the CS1602 system and the user couldoperate the two CS85Gs as a Multiple Independent system. After each change, the CompuScope hardwarewould have to be correctly software configured using the configuration utility described in theCompuScope Driver Installation Guide.Page 10CompuScope SDK Manual
PCI Bus CompuScopesPCI BusThe PCI bus is a processor-independent, multi-mastering 32 bit synchronous bus running at 33 MHz.The PCI bus can be found in almost any new personal computer, be it a Pentium-based or PowerPC orAlpha-based computer.A 64 bit extension of PCI is also becoming available. Similarly, 66 MHz bus speed will also be supportedby many motherboards.One of the main reasons for the popularity of PCI is the fast data throughput it offers between add-ondevices, such as video and SCSI controllers or CompuScope cards, and the CPU.The CompactPCI bus is electrically almost identical to the PCI bus but has a different mechanical formfactor and comes housed in an industrial quality chassis. The user nolonger has to play with DIP switches to set addresses on the add-on cards — the system configures itself!At boot-up time, the PCI BIOS queries all add-on cards for the resources they need: I/O space, memoryspace, interrupts lines, etc. All add-on cards must be able to answer this query if they are to be deemed PCIcompatible.Once the BIOS knows the complete list of resources needed by the add-on cards, it configures the systemby assigning mutually exclusive resources to different add-on cards. All add-on cards must be able toaccept the base addresses provided by the BIOS for communicating with their resources.In other words, PCI cards must not be hard-wired to specific I/O or memory addresses or interrupt lines.CompuScope SDK Manual Page 11
