This has been an historic yearfor IELA, when IELA has movedforward with new organisation setup completed as adopted during lastIELA Congress at Barcelona. With thischange quite a dynamism has beenactivated by the Board of Directors.Secretariat has taken up the role offollowing very closely prospectivemembers for IELA and the resultshave been overwhelming. I expressmy appreciation for this activity ofSecretariat which has resulted instrengthening IELA Membership.There were 120 members of IELAat Barcelona Congress.> 2 Members: M/s A.J. vanDeudekom and M/s Trans Impexresigned from IELA> 1 Member: M/s Bentraco wasexpelled due to non payment ofMembership fees.> 5 Additional Members acceptedin IELA family since Barcelona areBTG Suisse, Interflow Ireland, GoEvents USA, Siddhartha LogisticsIndia and WEL France.Couple of applications receivedhave been reviewed by Board andare expected to be inducted asmembers once process is completed.One more member from Azerbaijan,a white spot, is also expected to joinIELA once the process is completed.With the success of 1 st PartneringEvent at Barcelona there are 27 hotprospects for joining IELA and 41prospects have shown interest injoining IELA.Thus anticipated membership incoming months is expected to toucharound 129.As was conveyed by Chairman BobMoore, new Board have revised theprocess of processing New Applicationsand same are now scrutinised bySecretariat and presented to Boardfor review with this Role ofMembership Working Group inscrutinising new applications hasbeen dispensed with. As explainedby Chairman, this makes the processfaster and leaves members ofMembership Working Group toconcentrate on other areas relatedto spreading the IELA brand to newagents in areas not represented atIELA or new players who havejoined this specialised exhibitionlogistics field.This will need discussions amongstmembers of Membeship WorkingGroup revising this aspect ofMembership Working Group. Wehave had discussions regarding thisaspect at Barcelona where creationof Data Base of agents involved inexhibition logistics particularly inarea and regions not represented inIELA was discussed. It is suggestedthat members of the MembershipWorking Group will take on regionsin their areas of operations for suchexploration. Also other aspects suchas promotion of IELA membershipdrive along with PR Group, relatingwith new members in IELA will bediscussed during next Congress atMunich. I would welcome any othersuggestion for Membership WorkingGroup to make its impact in IELAideology.Looking forward to suggestions andcontributions for making MembershipWorking Group effective in furtheringgoals of IELA. ⊳Shirish Kulkarni40IELAREPORT71

I joined Vicki for theExhibition and a couple of additionalIndustry Events attached to the IAEEConvention--- two of which werethe Annual Exhibition ServiceContractor’s Association businessdinner as well as the third edition ofExhibition Summit Meeting whichincluded most of the majorExhibition Industry Associations inthe US.In fact, of all the IndustryAssociations present at theConvention, IELA was the onlyAssociation interviewed on theConvention News Network coveringthe event----thus giving IELAadditional positive exposure to theConvention exhibitors andattendees.We shared a generous amount oftime with the new incomingPresident of IAEE, David Dubois,who is quite enthusiastic about thecurrent and future IELA/IAEErelationship.In fact, Mr. Dubois has asked IELAto prepare a learning session /presentation to be included in thenext IAEE Convention in Houston,Texas, this coming December. I willbe eager to solicit the support of allof our US IELA colleagues tocontribute and participate in thedevelopment of the presentation.(In fact an open invitation isextended to any IELA member whowould like to contribute. I will passalong the format and seminarparameters when discussed withthe IAEE.)Also, we had time to discuss themany accomplishments of theoutgoing President, Mr. StevenHacker who presided over the IAEEfor 21 years.Mr. Hacker received the 2012 JMIC(Joint Meeting Industry Council)Power and Profile Award whichrecognizes individuals andorganizations whose advocacyefforts have advanced the interestsof the events and exhibitionsindustry.Hacker was one of the sector’smost vocal and effective advocates.I cite this because hisaccomplishments have relevance toall of us in IELA; his advocacy effortson behalf of our Industry may havesimilar relevance to ExhibitionIndustry/Government issues in allof our countries.Working with the US TravelAssociation and the AmericanSociety of Association Executives, hechampioned expansion of the VisaWaiver Program to the US Congress.Mr. Hacker stressed that:> Visa issues prevent 116,000international visitors fromattending US Exhibitions eachyear including 78,400 buyers and37,900 exhibitors.> That the average spending byeach international buyer andattendee is more than $13,600.> Spending by internationalexhibitors averages more than$36,100.> By reducing US Visa Barriers,the US economy would realizeincreases in business sales ofabout $3billion a year.> Reduced Visa barriers wouldcreate more than 17,500 jobsdirectly and 43,000 jobsindirectly.> More than $750 million in taxrevenue would be generated.Thanks largely to Mr. Hacker’sefforts, US Travel recentlyreported that:> Approximately 90% of visaapplicants are interviewed withinthree weeks of applicationsubmission.> In addition, a 40% rise inprocessing capacity has beenachieved in Brazil and soon willbe in China.Are any of these Visa issuessimilar in your countries? Couldincreased exhibition business bevaluable to the business andtourism sectors of all of ourcountries? Obviously, the answer isyes-----the question : what, ifanything, can we as IELA do toassist----to provide information tothose who do advocate for relaxedVisa regulations?IELAREPORT7141
