102r<strong>The</strong> <strong>Path</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Purity</strong>himself tQ, culture is painful. <strong>The</strong> reverse is easy progress.'Again, the intuition <strong>of</strong> one who does not perfect skilfulnessin ecstasy is sluggish, and it is quick *in one who perfects skilfulnessin ecstasy. Moreover, the classification according tocraving and ignorance, and the chief reason <strong>of</strong> calm and insightshould be understood. Namely, to one overcome by cravingprogress is painful; 1 to one not overcome by craving it is easy.And to one overcome by ignorance intuition is sluggish; to onenot so overcome it is quick. And he who has no past conditionsfor calm makes painful progress; one who has suchmakes easy progress. And one who has no past conditionsfor insight is <strong>of</strong> sluggish intuition; one who has such is <strong>of</strong> quickintuition.r Classification in respect <strong>of</strong> our lower nature" 1 and controllingfaculties should also be understood. Namely, to one whosenature is acutely corrupt and whose controlling faculties ares<strong>of</strong>t, progress is painful and intuition sluggish. But to .one<strong>of</strong> keen controlling faculties, intuition is quick. To one witha mild lower nature and s<strong>of</strong>t controlling faculties progress iseasy and intuition sluggish. But to one <strong>of</strong> keen controllingfaculties intuition is quick. Thus in progress and intuitionthe concentration <strong>of</strong> that person who attaint to concentrationby means <strong>of</strong> painful progress and sluggish intuition is saiol tobe <strong>of</strong> painful progress and sluggish intuition. In the remaining^three clauses the same method is to be understood. 3 Thus it isfourfold as <strong>of</strong> painful progress and sluggish intuition and so on.In the second tetrad there is concentration limited andwith a limited object, there is concentration limited and withan infinite object, there is concentration infinite and with alimited object, there is concentration infinite and with aninfinite object. Of these, that concentration which, not beingfit, is not able to become a cause fox the next-higher\Thana is[88] " hmited."
