110 <strong>The</strong> <strong>Path</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Purity</strong>Thus at all times it is an impediment. It should be cut o&in thiS way:—If little remains to be done, he should finish it.If there be much to do and it pertains to the Order, he shouldmake it over to the Order, or to those brothers who are theburden-bearers <strong>of</strong> the Order. If it pertains to himself, heshould make it over to his own burden-bearers.. * Failing suchpersons, he should leave it to the Order and go away.(vi\ " Wayfaring " means going on a journey. If at anyplace somebody is waiting to be ordained, or any <strong>of</strong> therequisites are to be received, and he cannot endure not to getthem, then if, on going to tha forest, and performing the duty<strong>of</strong> a recluse he finds it difficult to suppress his will to go, heshould go and finish what he had to do, and then use zeal inthe duty <strong>of</strong> a recluse.(vii) " Kin " means, in the monastery, the teacher, thepreceptor, a resident pupil, a personal pupil, fellow-brethrenunder the same teacher or preceptor as oneself; m the houseit means mother, father, brother and so forth. When theyget ill they are an impediment, which therefore one shouldcut <strong>of</strong>f by ministering to them and making them well. Hereinif the preceptor being ill does not recover quickly, he shouldbe taken care <strong>of</strong> as long as life lasts. And jfche same with theinitiation-teacher, the ordmation-teacher, a resident pupil,personal pupils one has ordained and initiated, and feliowbrethrenunder the same preceptor as oneself. But the teacher' <strong>of</strong> paraphrasing, the teacher <strong>of</strong> textual study, a pupil in paraphrasing,a pupil m textual study and fellow-brethren underthe same teacher should be taken care <strong>of</strong> so lojig as the paraphrasing*and the textual study last. <strong>The</strong>y should be takencare <strong>of</strong> beyond that stage by one who can do so. Parentsshould be tended 1 like the preceptor. Indeed, even if they areplaced m royal authority, yet expect service from their son,[95] he should serve them. If they have no medicine, heshould give them his own. If he has none, he should seekfor it in going round for alms and give it to them.
