<strong>II</strong>I.—Acceptance <strong>of</strong> the Subjects^ <strong>of</strong> Meditation 129or not increasing, object, plane, grasp, cause, suitableconduct.<strong>The</strong> Forty Subjects <strong>of</strong> Meditation.<strong>The</strong>re (in the Table <strong>of</strong> Contents) under " exposition <strong>of</strong> thenumber"—mention has been made <strong>of</strong> the forty subjects <strong>of</strong>meditation, to wit, the Ten " Devices," the Ten Foul Things,the Ten Recollections, the Four Divine States, the FourFormless States, the One Perception, the Onp Specification.Of these the Ten Devices are earth-device, water-device,heat-device, air-device, blue-green device, yellow device, reddevice, white device, light device, separated space device.A swollen thing, discoloured thing, festering thing, fissuredthing, mangled thing, dismembered thing, cut and dismemberedthing, bloody thing, worm-foul thing, skeleton:—theseare the Ten Foul Things.Buddha-recollection, Law-recollection, Order-recollection,morahty-recollection, liberality-recollection, ^em-recollection,death-recollection, body-mindfulness, respiration-mindfulness,calm-recollection—these are the Ten Recollections,[111] Love, pity, sympathy, equanimity—these are the FourDivine States.<strong>The</strong> sphere <strong>of</strong> unlimited space, the sphere <strong>of</strong> unlimitedconsciousness, the sphere <strong>of</strong> nothingness, the sphere <strong>of</strong> theneither perceptible nor imperceptible,—these are the FourFormless States.<strong>The</strong> perception <strong>of</strong> the abominableness <strong>of</strong> food is the OnePerception.<strong>The</strong> One Specification is that <strong>of</strong> the four elements.Determination by way <strong>of</strong> exposition <strong>of</strong> the number shouldthus be known." By way <strong>of</strong> Inducement <strong>of</strong> access and ecstasy " is as followsthese ten subjects <strong>of</strong> meditation, namely, the eight recollections,excepting mindfulness as to the body, and mindfulnessas to respiration, perception <strong>of</strong> the abominableness <strong>of</strong> food,specification <strong>of</strong> the four elements—induce access. <strong>The</strong> restinduce ecstasy."By way <strong>of</strong> the different kinds <strong>of</strong> Jhana," is as follows:here among the things inducing ecstasy the Ten Devices,9
