<strong>II</strong>I.—Acceptance <strong>of</strong> the Subjects <strong>of</strong> Meditation ] 25worry, misgiving, obstinate grasping, tenacity,—these^ andother states arise abundantly in one who walks in delusion.Clean liberality, desire to* see the Noble Ones, desire to hearthe good Law, abundance <strong>of</strong> joy, absence <strong>of</strong> craftiness, 1absence <strong>of</strong> wiliness, faithfulness in objects <strong>of</strong> faith,—theseand other states arise abundantly in one who walks in faith.Docility, good friendship, moderation in food, mindfulnessand comprehension, application to wakefulness, enKitionover objects <strong>of</strong> emotion, wise effort due to emotion,—theseand other states abundantly arise in one who walks in intelligence.Talkativeness, fondness* <strong>of</strong> society, want <strong>of</strong> delightin moral application, unsteadiness m work, 1 smokiness bynight, 2 luminosity by day, 3 running after this and that object,—these and other states abundantly arise in one who walks •in thoughts. Thus one may explain the kinds <strong>of</strong> conductfrom the procedure <strong>of</strong> states.Bu$ because this system <strong>of</strong> explaining the kinds <strong>of</strong> conductin all then* ways does not come in the Pali, neither in thecommentary, but is only stated after the opinion <strong>of</strong> theteachers, therefore it should not be trusted in all its essence.For those who walk in hate etc. can perform, by leading azealous life, the postures and so on which have been statedas belonging to those who walk in lust etc. And for a singleperson <strong>of</strong> mixed conduct, the postures etc. having variouscharacteristics are not suitable. 1 But that system <strong>of</strong> explainingthe kinds <strong>of</strong> conduct which is stated in the commentaries,should be trusted in essence. For this has been said: " <strong>The</strong>teacher who "has attained to a knowledge <strong>of</strong> the thoughts <strong>of</strong> othersknowing the conduct will teach the subject <strong>of</strong> meditation. Anotherkind <strong>of</strong> teacher should ask the puptl. <strong>The</strong>refore either by knowledge<strong>of</strong> the thoughts <strong>of</strong> others, or by asking the person, one shouldknow: thi$ person walks in lust, this one in either hate or any<strong>of</strong> the others."What is suitable for a person <strong>of</strong> which conduct ? Speakingfirst <strong>of</strong> him who walks m lust:—Among dwellmgs which are1 Sollow the footnote.2 Meditating at night on things to be done by day.3 Striving to do m the day what was thought <strong>of</strong> at night.
