20 <strong>April</strong> <strong>2009</strong> Beijing - Chief of the General Staff of the People's Liberation Army ChenBingde met Tin Aye, member of Myanmar's State Peace and Development Council andmade clear that China is willing to maintain and enhance friendly military cooperation withMyanmar.21 <strong>April</strong> <strong>2009</strong> Beijing - <strong>Foreign</strong> Minister Yang Jiechi will focus on the Middle East issueduring visits to Egypt, Palestine, Israel, Syria and Russia. Yang is making official visits to thefive countries from <strong>April</strong> 21-27. He will see Egyptian <strong>Foreign</strong> Minister Ahmed Ali Aboul Gheit,<strong>Foreign</strong> Minister of the Palestinian National Authority Riyad al-Malki, Israeli <strong>Foreign</strong> MinisterAvigdor Lieberman, Syrian <strong>Foreign</strong> Minister Walid Mualem and Russian <strong>Foreign</strong> MinisterSergei Lavrov. <strong>Foreign</strong> Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu noted that China is ready tocontinue playing a constructive role in promoting a political solution to the Middle East issue."It is China's consistent position that the involved parties should, on the basis of therelevant resolutions of the United Nations and the 'land-for-peace' principle, settle thedispute by political and diplomatic means and realize the peaceful coexistence ofPalestine and Israel as well as the Arab world and Israel."21 <strong>April</strong> <strong>2009</strong> Jiang Yu told a regular press conference that China pledged to work moreclosely with the international community to fight terrorism, specifically mentioning the EasternTurkestan Islamic Party as a focus of <strong>Chinese</strong> efforts:"Combating the Eastern Turkestan Islamic Party (ETIP) is an important part ofinternational counter-terrorism efforts, which serve the interests of China, the UnitedStates and other countries. Haq was ETIP's major leader who has involved inrecruiting terrorists and masterminding terrorist activities. ETIP is a terroristorganization designated by the <strong>Chinese</strong> government and the United Nations SecurityCouncil. China takes a very clear stance on fighting terrorism and actively participatesin the world counter-terrorism process."Jiang's comments came after the US Treasury Department on 20 <strong>April</strong> designated Abdul Haqas a terrorist who supports al-Qaeda and declared it would freeze his assets and prohibittransactions with him. The US move followed a decision by the UN Security Council's 1267Committee to place Haq on its list of people associated with Osama bin Laden, al-Qaeda orthe Taleban and subject to sanctions by UN member states.Jiang Yu told the regular briefing that China is hoping an international donor conference thisweek in Brussels will help Somalia combat the pirates. "We expect positive outcome from theinternational donors conference on Somalia so as to provide substantive support for theSomali political process." Jiang said China supported the upcoming conference and wouldsend senior diplomats from China's EU delegation to it.Jiang Yu said that China called on Japan to deal with the "politically sensitive" issue ofTokyo's Yasukuni Shrine in a manner that will help promote the progress made in Sino-Japanese relations. The comment came after Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso made anoffering to the controversial shrine for its spring festival; and comes ahead of Aso's plannedvisit to China from <strong>April</strong> 29-30 to meet President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao.21 <strong>April</strong> <strong>2009</strong> <strong>Defence</strong> Minister Liang Guanglie met US Chief of Naval Operations AdmiralGary Roughead in Qingdao on the sidelines of a four-day celebration to mark the 60thanniversary of the founding of the PPLA Navy. During the meeting, Roughead offeredcongratulations to Liang, and expressed his hope that naval forces of the two countrieswould deepen exchanges and cooperation in the future. Liang said China attached greatimportance to Sino-US military relations, and had made active efforts to promote their ties.Liang Guanglie also met Admiral Metin Atac, commander of Turkey's naval forces, and the18
