LBC Express Inc.’s bright red bikes, vans, and lorries are a popular sighton the streets all over the country andis widely recognised by the people, given that the company has beenproviding the global Filipino peopleat home and abroad with courier, money remittance and logisticsservices for 61 years. “We are theonly global Filipino company thatprovides all these services,” saysJocel. “Other companies just doone or the other. Providing all theseservices give us the advantage overour competitors, in addition of courseto our global network.”“For the millions of Filipinos aroundthe world, LBC is their link to theirfamilies. Many of the Filipinosworking or living abroad only havetheir colleagues around them, so oneof the ways they choose to expresstheir love and emotion is by sendinghard earned items to their families inthe Philippines. For example, theysend money for schooling or evenfood stuffs or clothing so that they canlet their families back home enjoywhat they are experiencing abroad.”LBC Express Inc.’s business is “thetimed delivery of goods and money”,and this could be from practicallyanywhere in the world. It has 1,200branches globally, with 1,000 of thosein the Philippines and the rest spreadout across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, mainland Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific andAustralia, where significant numbersof global Filipinos call home. “Ourmission is to link and bridge globalFilipinos to their families living inthe Philippines.” To accomplish thismission, LBC Express Inc. has a strongfleet of vehicles in the Philippines thatcomprises 900 motorcycles, 400 vansand trucks and over a hundred servicevehicles. The business spends aroundseven to eight million pesos a monthon gasoline. LBC buys its fuel fromShell using Shell Card.“We have to deliver. One of themain reasons we are with Shell isthat it has a bigger network than itscompetitors,” explains Jocel. “Wehave a thousand branches and ourdeliveries are timed, so our truckshave to be filled all the time. We can’thave a situation where we are rushingour deliveries and one of our driversexperiences difficulty in gassing upbecause his fuel card is not valid orrecognised in filling station’s system, which is what happens with otherfuel companies.” Jocel cites Shell’scentralised computer system as a bigdraw for LBC, as their drivers feelconfident that their fuel cards willalways be accepted anywhere theygo, in addition to the benefit that italso made assigning cards to newpeople more efficient. “The Shellsystem is very flexible. You can assigncards to other people and there’s noadded cost. The Shell Card Online isa great tool for a company of our size– imagine if you have nearly 1,000motorcycles and 400 trucks – tryingto track them all manually would bea nightmare. This system allows us toefficiently track our fleet.”LBC Express Inc. has been usingShell fuel cards for over 10 yearsand the relationship between the twocompanies remains strong. In fact, the wide reach of the Shell networkhas worked well for one of Jocel’sprojects: LBC Express Inc.’s RondasPhilippinas – the biggest bicycle racein the country. “It’s our version ofthe Tour de France,” says Jocel. “Itis completed in 12 stages covering1,600 kilometres nationwide over16 days. We have a large entourageof vehicles that accompanies therace to keep everything moving, likesetting up starts and finishes amongother activities related to the race.Vehicle-wise, carrying out the eventsuccessfully requires around 12 vans,20 motorcycles and 30 cars – Shellarranges for exclusive use of a fillingstation when we arrive in a townalong the route of the race.LBC Express Inc. has a solidreputation at home and abroad.“People trust us,” says Jocel. And it’sgood to know that LBC can trust Shellfor all its fuel needs. SWPshell world philippines i 5

Keeping the powerflowing in the PhilippinesProviding 45% of Luzon island’s electricity needs from deep water gas, theMalampaya Deep Water Gas-to-Power project is entering the next phase ofits life to keep gas flowing with a new platform and wells.A DeCAde of Powering a nAtionThe story of the Malampaya Project isone of resilience, perseverance, andinnovation. It is a story intertwinedwith the rich and at times tumultuoushistory of a nation. It is a tale of menand women, whose courage andingenuity are a testament to the triumphof the human spirit, over seeminglyinsurmountable odds. The discovery in 1992 of the richMalampaya gas field off the coastof Palawan presented, in equalmeasure, a chance and a challenge.Spearheaded by the Departmentof Energy (Doe) and developedand operated by Shell PhilippinesExploration, B.V. (SPEX) and its JointVenture partners Chevron MalampayaLLC and the Philippine National OilCompany- Exploration Corporation(PNoc-ec), the project’s dauntinglogistical, social, environmental andfinancial challenges required theunified efforts of all involved. Yetthe story remains simple and true—there was an opportunity, it wasextraordinary, and they seized it.Today, the Malampaya Deep WaterGas-to-Power Project is still the single, largest, most significant industrialendeavour in Philippine history. Thestate-of-the-art technology to harnessindigenous natural gas from one of thedeepest subsea wells in the world, andthen to convey it through the longestunderwater pipeline in Asia to anonshore gas plant in Batangas, is acomplex engineering feat that unfoldsevery day. Three combined-cycle gasturbine plants – the 1,000-megawattSta. Rita power station, the500-megawatt San Lorenzo powerstation, and the 1,200-megawatt Iliganpower station–are supplied with thisOperated by Shell, Malampaya is a joint venture between the Department of Energy,Shell Philippines Exploration, B.V. Malampayais now at that crucial bend, where itmust forge ahead towards delivering itspromises safely, reliably, responsibly, and with the same vigilance, dedication and singleness of purposethat have made all of it possible.Malampaya Phase 2 entails the drilling andinstallation of two new subsea wells that willtap more natural gas from Malampaya. Thenew wells will be installed in 2013.Malampaya now enters Phases 2 and3 (MP2, MP3) of its development. Thiswill entail the drilling of two additionalwells by 2014 and the installation ofa new depletion compression platformby 2015. These upgrades are crucialto maximise the recovery of gasfrom the reservoir and to continueto benefit the Philippines in terms ofpower, revenues, jobs, and a cleanerenvironment. As always, the tasksseem daunting, the stakes are high, butprogress is steadily being made.18 i shell world philippines

Malampaya Phase 3 involves the design, fabrication and installation of a new depletioncompression platform to be placed nextto the existing Shallow Water Platform. A50-metre bridge will link both structures. The front-end engineering design(FeeD) for the depletion compressionplatform has been completed bypartners Fluor Philippines and Arup. The concept selected for the MP3substructure is a unique self-installingplatform. This significantly reducesoffshore risks related to installation.MP3 also obtained an amendmentof its Environmental ComplianceCertificate (ecc) from the Departmentof Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau(DENR-EMB), yet another crucialmilestone for the project in movingforward. The permit is given after it isestablished that the project will haveno significant negative environmentalimpact. Obtaining the amendmentsignifies Malampaya’s unwaveringcommitment towards protectingthe environment and championingenvironmentally sound practicesin all its facilities and operations.Malampaya Phase 2 and 3 ProjectManager Antoine Bliek said, “Weconduct our work with razor focuson safety and environment; alwaysrelentlessly striving for excellence withevery task.”significant milestone achieved. MP3 isseen as a poster-child of how projectsshould be executed in the rest of theShell group.”Delivery is nextIn line with the JV final investmentdecision, major contracts have alsobeen awarded to companies such asFluor Philippines and Arup for DetailedDesign and Keppel Subic Shipyard forfabrication.Located in Subic, on the west coast ofLuzon, the yard is where fabrication, installation and integration of thesubstructure and top-side modules ofthe DCP will take place, supporting thecompletion of MP3. The project willgenerate local jobs and bring technicalexpertise into the country. MP2&3supports Shell’s thrust for local contentand the nation’s aspiration to developa local capability in the oil and gasindustry, generate employment andcontribute to the local economy.MP2&3 also partnered with Australianfirm Site Group International Limitedto provide Health, Safety, Securityand Environment (Hsse) skills trainingand competency assessment servicesto employees and contractors of theproject. Its main objective is to achieve‘Goal Zero’ in the Fabrication Yardand offshore executions by significantlyraising the Hsse standards andcompetencies of all workers. Thetraining is currently being deliveredat Site’s Philippine training facilitybased at the Clark Freeport Zone inPampanga. The 300,000 square-metrecampus is one of Asia’s premieretraining facilities, and is a fullycontained campus that delivers a widerange of standards-based vocationaltrade training, Hsse and specialist skillstraining, among others.According to MP2 and 3 PrincipalHsse Lead Neil Burton, “Apart fromthe immediate training needs of theproject, our long-term objective is tomake the Malampaya Hse TrainingCentre and the Hse programmes aproject legacy that’s unique, world-class,and sustainable -- one that is not onlylinked to Shell’s core Hse values butmeets the requirements of the globalConstruction and Oil & Gas industry. Itwill raise Hsse standards in the localworkforce and help provide employmentpathways into those industries. We arealso looking at sponsoring trainees fromPalawan in the Hsse programme aspart of Malampaya’s commitment ofraising employment opportunities forPalaweños.”For everyone at Malampaya, poweringthe future is a shared ambition. Afuture of nurtured and empoweredcommunities, and a nation assured ofa more stable supply of energy and acleaner source of power for millions ofFilipinos. In big and small ways, theMalampaya Deepwater Gas-to-PowerProject is helping to move the countrytowards that future. “That’s cool!” was my first reactionwhen I learned about Shell Ecomarathon. That day was the start ofmy Shell Eco-marathon Asia craze.Pictures and stories about it werenot enough. I had to be in SepangInternational Racing Circuit, where allthe action unfolded.Last year was not my time to witnessShell Eco-marathon Asia live. In manyoccasions, we could hear the shrieksand shouts of excitement as studentteamssettled their cars in the garages.A chorus of “hoorays” filled the airevery time a car passed the TechnicalInspection as this only meant that thecar surpassed Shell’s rigorous safetystandards and is ready to hit thetracks for practice runs. While student-teams busied themselveshurdling the inspection, the SocialMedia team, which I was part of,had a different wisp of enthusiasm to22 i shell world philippines

We were at awe andamazed by the creative product ofyoung minds’ ingenuity, that, beforewe knew it, we’ve already seen allenergy efficient cars built by 119student-teams from 18 countries acrossAsia and Middle East! For 2012, 81 cars competed in thePrototype Category and 38 in theUrbanConcept Category. Prototypevehicles were typically smaller insize and more futuristic-looking, withan overall design concept to reducedrag and maximise efficiency. Inthe UrbanConcept category, teamsdesigned and built four-wheel, fueleconomyvehicles that look similarto the passenger cars we see onthe road today. For both vehiclecategories, teams used either InternalCombustion Engines that run on eitherdiesel, gasoline, ethanol, fatty acidmethyl ester (FAME) or Shell Gas toLiquids; or e-mobility energy sourcesincluding solar, fuel cells and batteryelectric technologies. On this day, I was nolonger just a proudFilipina.
