Looking aheadKey challengesand actionsSince 2007, <strong>Oakville</strong> has adopted amission-driven approach to strategicplanning that converts the town’svision, mission and values intostrategic goals.Council then establishes its workplan based on those strategicgoals, which it believes require thegreatest attention. The specificgoals and actions are measuredand tracked annually throughdepartmental business plans andthe town’s performance-based,program-based budgeting system.Integrating Council’s strategic goalsinto annual departmental businessplans not only ensure staff andCouncil’s goals are aligned, but alsoprovide the flexibility to respond tonew and emerging issues.To be the most livable town in CanadaTo develop and implement the community planning framework to achieve ourvision to be the most livable town in Canada.Key Actions 2011• Defend the town’s Livable <strong>Oakville</strong> Official Plan at the Ontario Municipal Board• Begin development of the zoning by-law and urban design guidelines to supportimplementation of the Livable <strong>Oakville</strong> Official Plan• Finalize implementation requirement for development of North <strong>Oakville</strong>• Develop comprehensive community building framework• Complete community visioning for the OTMH site• Begin development of Transportation Master PlanTo enhance our economic environmentTo create and support conditions that will ensure a thriving and sustainablelocal economy.Key Actions 2011• Continue implementation of economic development strategy• Launch annual economic development forum to bring together local businessleaders to assist in development of ongoing strategies to attract investment andretain businesses in <strong>Oakville</strong>• Work with landowners and Halton Region to move forward with servicingof Winston Park West employment lands• Complete review of <strong>Oakville</strong> tourism strategy and partnership• Continue to develop strong working relationship with Chamber of Commerceand Business Improvement AreasThis is not a work plan that willsit on a shelf for four years; itwill constantly be fine tunedthroughout the term of Council.For 2011-2014, Council hasidentified the following eight areasof focus.Town of <strong>Oakville</strong> 2010 Annual Report |11
