To enhance oureconomic environmentDid you know?• There are 1,400 hectaresof parkland and 220 kmof park trails in theTown of <strong>Oakville</strong>.• In the past four years,the town added 470,890square feet to the existing1.48 million square feetof town-owned facilitiesbringing the total to 1.95million square fee.• The town operates andmaintains an inventory of1,780 municipal parkingspaces in the commercialdistricts of Downtown<strong>Oakville</strong> and Kerr Village.• During the autumn of 2010,the town removed over4,000 tonnes of leaves withour bulk loose leaf collectionservice and recycled toprovide compost.• To enhance customerservice, the BuildingServices departmentdeveloped a checklist tohelp residents completetheir building permitapplications. As a result,staff can now verifythe completeness of theapplication within twobusiness days.Key accomplishments• In August, Council approved the Downtown <strong>Oakville</strong> Strategic Action Plan that guidesthe future of downtown <strong>Oakville</strong> over the next 20 years. The plan outlines opportunitiesto develop and further enhance <strong>Oakville</strong>’s downtown as a sustainable, well-designed andaccessible area while protecting its unique historic character.• Council resolved to donate up to $170 million with a further $30 million if needed atcompletion to Halton Healthcare Services’ local share plan to fund the development ofthe new <strong>Oakville</strong> hospital. The new hospital will be approximately 1.6 million square feetand include a number of environmentally sustainable features. The town has developed aconcept, a strategic investment, and marketing plans for a Life Sciences and TechnologyPark located adjacent to the new hospital.• Economic Development staff began working with Sheridan Institute and Halton Regionto develop a concept plan for a digital media and animation hub in <strong>Oakville</strong> that wouldleverage the educational assets of Sheridan Institute.• The town was awarded $75,000 in federal funding through the Invest Canada CommunityInitiatives program and secured partnership contributions totaling $60,000 for the abovenotedsector development initiatives.• In August, Council confirmed its support to proceed with servicing the Winston ParkWest employment lands. Based on a market assessment, over eight million square feet ofindustrial and office construction is estimated for this area.• Economic Development created a Business Profile for <strong>Oakville</strong> detailing information ondemographics, development charge rates, taxes, major employers, and future development.This profile is used for investment attraction and provides companies with key informationthey can use in their locational analysis and decision-making.Town of <strong>Oakville</strong> 2010 Annual Report | 7
