TheSI-601 Standard Smoke Alarm uses an ionisationtype sensor to detect the presence of smoke.Ionisation type smoke alarms are generally moreeffective at detecting fast, flaming fires whichconsume combustible materials rapidly and spreadfire quickly. The SO-601 Toast Proof Smoke Alarmuses an optical (photoelectric) type sensor whichis more effective at detecting slow burning fires, which can smoulder for hours before bursting intoflames.TOAST PROOF = less sensitive to cookingfumes. (Optical alarms are less prone tonuisance alarms due to cooking fumes.)For maximum protection, use both types ofsmoke alarms on each level of your home

APPLICATIONWARNING: Your FireAngel smokealarm can be installed into a newbuild property as additional protection toan existing smoke detection system only. Itcannot be used as a substitute for a hard wiredsystem as required in new build properties. Inthis type of property the building regulationsrequire alarms to be interlinked. You canobtain further information from your local fireservice or building control department at yourlocal council offices. These sources generallyprovide advice on new builds or projects thatrequire planning permission.where the temperature is normally between 4°C(40°F) and 38°C (100°F). The type of smoke alarmused in each location should be appropriate to theenvironment. Check the section on ‘Positioning’ toensure that the smoke alarm is to be correctlypositioned for the particular dwelling into which itis intended to be installed.WARNING: The alarm positionsshown overleaf are based on typicalhomes. Construction and layout of individualdwellings will vary, so this should be regardedonly as a guide. Check with your local firestation for further guidance.Your smoke alarm typically meets the minimumrequirements for family living units in existingbuildings, as long as at least one unit is installed oneach floor/level of your property. In order to achieve the earliest fire warning, werecommend that a smoke alarm is fitted in all rooms3

Multi-family or mixed occupant residence(Tenancy building, student accommodation)Your FireAngel smoke alarm can also be used inindividual flats and bedsits, providing the sameconditions are met as for a single-family residence. However, there must already be a primaryfire detection system that meets regulatoryrequirements for common areas such as lobbiesand hallways.Institutions and HotelsThis includes motels, hospitals, day care facilities,long-term health care facilities, boarding housesand dormitories. Your smoke alarm can be usedin individual sleeping/resident rooms, providingthe same conditions are met as for a singlefamilyresidence. However, there must alreadybe a primary fire detection system that meetsregulatory requirements for common areas suchas lobbies and hallways. Use of this smoke alarmin common areas may not provide sufficientfire warning to residents or meet regulatoryrequirements. This smoke alarm is designed to operate asstandalone smoke alarm.WARNING: This FireAngel smokealarm will not communicate with othersmoke alarms or fire alarm systems. It is notintended as a substitute for a complete alarmsystem.Mobile Homes and CaravansThis smoke alarm is suitable for use in mobilehomes and caravans.Commercial and Industrial PremisesThis smoke alarm is not intended for any nonresidential, commercial or industrial application, nor for any other purpose than described above.5

POSITIONINGIonisation type smoke alarms are generallymore effective at detecting fast, flaming fires whichconsume combustable materials rapidly andspread fire quickly.Examples fast flaming fires = Ignited paper, flamingcurtains and oil firesOptical (Toast Proof) smoke alarms areless prone to false alarms from cooking fumes, are therefore suitable for locations near kitchens. However optical smoke alarms are moresusceptible to nuisance alarms from steam andshould not be located too close to bathroomsand showers.Examples of slow smouldering fires = cigarette onfurniture and bedding, overheating electrical cables. It is recommended that your FireAngel smokealarm is NOT to be fitted in the followinglocations:• Bathrooms, shower-rooms, and other verydamp or humid areas, where the moisture cancause unwanted alarms.• Kitchens. Kitchens should be protected withself-contained Heat Alarms, as the combustionparticles from cooking in kitchens willresult in unwanted alarms and permanentcontamination of the smoke alarm’s sensor.• In areas where excessive dust or dirt couldcontaminate the sensing chamber, making itover sensitive or impairing smoke entry.• In areas where the ambient temperature is notcontrolled and may regularly drift below 4°C(40°F) or above 38°C (100°F) e.g. unheatedbuildings, open attic spaces.• Very dirty, dusty or greasy areas.• In very draughty areas, such as close to ceilingfans or fresh air vents. Draughts can blowsmoke away from the alarm.• In insect infested areas. Insects can clogopenings to the sensing chamber, preventingsmoke entry or causing unwanted alarms.6

• Within 30cm (12”) of a fluorescent light fittingwhich emits electrical ‘noise’ that can preventcorrect alarm operation.• In wall positions that are more than 30cm(12”) away from the ceiling (see ‘How to installyour smoke alarm’).• In ‘dead air’ spaces (see following diagram).• Within 30cm (12”) of light fittings or otherceiling based obstructions.1 METRE(3 FEET)DEADAIR SPACESBEST LOCATION(IN CENTRE OF CEILING)100MM(4 INCHES)100MM(4 INCHES)7

WHAT ARE THELIMITATIONS OF MY SMOKEALARM?Your FireAngel smoke alarm is designed to alertyou by sounding an alarm when it senses smoke,i.e. it can only sense smoke and alert you if smokereaches it! If a fire develops in an area remote fromthe location of the smoke alarm, such as anotherroom or another level, smoke may not reach thesmoke alarm in sufficient time or quantity to senseand alert you to the danger. We recommend that as a minimum you installboth ionisation and optical smoke alarms onevery floor of your property. For comprehensivecoverage a smoke alarm should also be fitted inevery room. This smoke alarm cannot be used to provideprimary fire detection in common areas usedby different residents such as blocks of flats andhotels. The FireAngel smoke alarm may not alarmbefore a fire causes damage, injury or death, as thesmoke may not reach the smoke alarm in time.Examples include smoking in bed and violent gasexplosions. This smoke alarm may not respond ina reasonable time if it is not installed in the bestposition, or if furniture or other obstacles arelocated between the smoke alarm and the fire.WARNING: Your smoke alarm willnot operate without a battery installed.Only batteries listed on page 14 should beused and must be changed immediately whenthe low battery signal is given or the unit willfail. Test weekly, read and follow all instructionsor the unit will not operate properly.Your FireAngel smoke alarm will advise you of alow battery condition by emitting an audible ‘chirp’every 40 seconds. When this occurs you mustchange the battery in the unit within 7 days tomaintain correct operation.8

IMPORTANT: Smoke alarms are designed to alert you with an audible alarm at a levelspecified by the British Standard BS EN 14604: 2005. Closed doors, walls and high ambientnoise levels will reduce this level. Temporary or permanently impaired hearing may result in thealarm not being heard. Stereos, traffic and other loud sources may also prevent the alarm beingheard. Heavy sleepers and residents under the influence of alcohol or drugs may also not hear orrespond to the alarm. Test and check that you can hear the alarm in all circumstances. If in doubtinstall additional smoke alarms as required.WARNING: The Smoke alarm is not suitable for alerting hearing impaired residents. We recommend that specially designed warning systems be installed that will alert hearingimpaired residents.WARNING: The smoke alarm accompanying this manual employs the latest technology andis independently tested as being compliant with all the relevant British Standards. However,as with any electronic product it may fail and may not sense all types of fire within sufficient timeto alert you of the danger and provide adequate time for your escape. In order to maximise yourlevel of safety always test your smoke alarm frequently to ensure it is in full working order. YourFireAngel smoke alarm is only suitable for usein domestic/ residential applications as coveredin this manual. It is not suitable for commercialor industrial applications.
