CULTURETARGET GROUPS - PART OF GENERAL VISIONTarget groups for Koge Kyst (in order by relevance):1. (New) citizens of Køge, commuters and new companies (including retail);2. Citizens of the Copenhagen metropolitan area (outside of Køge);3. (Foreign) tourists visiting the historical centre of Køge (extend stay) andtourists visiting Copenhagen city.Potential new citizens: young families with children and mature couplesalike.CURRENT SITUATION (CULTURE & LEISURE)Description of Southern Zealand in The Lonely Planet (2005):Southern Zealand lacks many of the obvious charms of the north, but thatmay well be part of its appeal. Instead of a wealth of palaces, galleries andglamorous coastal strips, you’ll find the regular Danish life at an enjoyablerelaxed pace - and a few historical diversions that will capture your interest.Køge - a medieval town located in Southern Zealand - has a rich history. Itswell preserved historic centre is the main reason for tourists to visit Køge.The main sights in the historic centre are as follows:• the town/market square (Torvet)• Køge Rådhus: Denmark’s oldest acting town Hall (1552)• Sankt Nicolai Kirke: this church dates from 1324, but the churchwas largely rebuilt in the 15th century• Køge Museum: this museum illustrates the cultural history of thetown and surrounding region• KØS (Museum of art in public spaces): an art museum thatspeciaLizes in outlining the creative process from an artist’searliest concept to the finished workMain cultural/leisure sights & activities within Køge region - besides thehistorical centre - are as follows:• Portalen in Greve: a live theatre and music house, also holds threegalleries showing varying exhibitions• Greve Museum: a museum of cultural history that has a permanentart exhibition• several (water & outdoor) sport facilities & activities such as yachtharbours, golf courses, canoeing, rowing, kayaking, offshorefishing, diving and cycling races• spa & wellness centre Kapellangaarden• Køge Festuge and Køge Beach Party: yearly music festivals takingplace in the Summer• several historical buildings such as castles• beaches and nature (for example Køge Rigde, Rhododendron parkand Trylleskoven)The following cultural & leisure facilities/activities are located in the KøgeKyst area:• station area: theatre/concert hall Bygningen• harbour: youth culture centre Tapperiet, Braunstein brewery (toursand special events), the rowing club, the canoeing and kayakingclub and winter swimmersThe town Køge mainly has a lot to offer for inhabitants/tourists interestedin culture (historic centre, several museums and music facilities & festivals)and water & outdoor sports. Also themain cultural/leisure sights & activitiesoutside Køgemay constitute a reason for new inhabitants to settle inKøge and for tourists to stay longer in Køge or to pay another visit to Køge.POTENTIAL OF KØGEWe believe that Køge has much potential due to its historic atmosphereand its location adjacent to the sea and natural landscape. Furthermore, thefact that Køge is part of the Copenhagen metropolitan area offers many opportunities(due to the large population and the many tourists that Copenhagenattracts). This will be reinforced by the high speed train connectionbetween Køge and Copenhagen.Køge should distinguish itself from Copenhagen by focusing on the qualitiesof the town and Southern Zealand (Danish life, enjoyable pace andhistorical diversions). We strongly recommend that Køge should strengthenits current profile (culture & sports). This can be realized by upgrading existingcultural and (water & outdoor) sport facilities - for example the rowingand kayaking club in the harbour - and by adding new cultural and sportfacilities & activities (hardware and software). These new facilities/activitiesshould initially appeal to (new) citizens of Køge and should be consistentwith our vision points: slow, local and small. The presence of severalinteresting museums in Køge can be used to organize several (temporary)activities and festivals in the public area.We are not in favour of adding a very large cultural facility such as theGuggenheim Museum in Bilbao (building = 24.000 m2), partly because sucha facility is particularly attractive for tourists instead of (new) inhabitant ofKøge or commuters. For us it is obvious that a new facility has to contributeto strengthening the identity of Køge.It is also necessary to improve the basic touristic infrastructure. Hereby werefer to increasing the amount of bars/restaurants and hotel rooms and tocreate more MICE (MICE = meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) locations. Moreover, expansion of the beach area and constructinga new yacht harbour seems sensible to do so. Finally, several small (craft)shops can be established in the harbour, which are complementary to theshops in de historical centre. If we take all the above mentioned facilitiesinto consideration, than the proposed 13.000 m2 for culture & leisure facilitiesis rather modest.VISION ON CULTURE & LEISURE FACILITIES/ACTIVITIESThe primary goal of Køge Kyst is to create as much life as possible in theplanning area. We believe that the focus should be on cultural and (water &outdoor) sport facilities and activities that fit the following key words: qualityof life, enjoyment, slow/relaxation, sustainability and authenticity. The following (other) underlying principles and elements are part of thevision:• low-impact traveling (slow travel - the opposite of mass tourism)• exclusive facilities/high end facilities & activities• upgrading existing facilities (further investigation is required)• new cultural facilities: a cultural cluster building (including abar/ restaurant) for the citizens of Køge and a museum (includingtemporary exhibitions) for citizens and tourists• new water & outdoor sports facilities/activities located around thebeach and in the surrounding landscape/forests• one or more (temporary) open air event terrains in the harbour tofacilitate several cultural activities/festivals in order to put thearea on the map (to attract investors)• improvement of touristic infrastructure:• new bars, restaurants and a 4*-hotel (and possibly a nightclub)• adding small (craft) shops and a few art galleries to the harbourarea• redevelopment of a former harbour building into a MICE-location (if28
possible)• realization of a yacht harbour in the sea• expansion of the beach area• improvement of public space by for example placing art objectsBEST PRACTICESShort term - focus on temporary activities (to put the planning area on themap):Art in public space:• 9 Pavilions (Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland)• SkulpturenPark (Köln, Germany)Temporary event area:• Norfolk area - part of an area of the harbour of The Hague that will beredeveloped the coming years (The Netherlands)Cultural events/festivals:• Photo Festival Naarden (The Netherlands)• Rathausplatz Vienna Film Festival (Austria)• Slow Food event: Slow Fish 2009 (Genova, Italy)• Sydfyn Fødevaremarked - culinary market in Svenborg (the onlyslow city in Denmark)Medium term - focus on (new) citizens of Køge and commuters:Cultural cluster buildings:• Zollverein (Ruhr area, Germany)• Verkade Fabriek (Den Bosch, The Netherlands)• Studio K (Amsterdam, The Netherlands)Basic touristic infrastructure• floating restaurant: Odessa (Amsterdam, The Netherlands)• event locations: De Fabrique (Utrecht)and Graansilo (Rotterdam,The Netherlands)• Badeschiff (Berlin, Germany)• Kastrup Søbad, CopenhagenLong term - focus on attracting (more) tourists to Køge:• River and Rowing Museum (Henly-on-Thames, UK)• Maritime Museum of Galicia (Vigo, Spain)• Beelden aan Zee/Sculptures by the sea (The Hague, The Netherlands)29
