Shining World Compassion AwardSuper Model Dedicatedto Helping Ethiopian ChildrenBy Taichung News Group, Formosa (Originally in Chinese)Born in Ethiopia, Ms. Anna Getaneh is blessed with not onlya beautiful appearance but also a kind and loving heart. In1993, she participated in a charity event held by PharmacistsWithout Borders, visiting a refugee camp at Moyale on the borderof Ethiopia and Kenya. There she was deeply saddened to see countless children and families in poverty andmisery. Upon returning home, she resolved to do something for her compatriots.In 1997, she secured a 37-acre plot of land in the village of Aleltu, 55 kilometers from the country’scapital, Addis Ababa. There she founded a nongovernment organization—the Ethiopian Children’s Fund (ECF).The first initiative they launched in the village was the ECF Education and Development Program (ECF-EDP)to help children in remote areas receive an education. Its teachers embrace a vision of “Children First” in thebelief that children should be free of the worries and economic pressures normally faced by adults. They shouldbe allowed to grow up in a happy and carefree environment. Therefore, in addition to providing nutritious mealsand health care to the young generation, the ECF feels the most important thing for children is to grow up undertender, loving care.On learning about the compassionate deeds of this charitable organization, Supreme Master ChingHai honored them and Miss Getaneh with the Shining World Compassion Award, as well as contributingUS$10,000 to support ECF’s noble projects. The Award was presented by our Association memberson April 26, Golden Year 8 (2011) and Miss Getaneh especially found time amid her busy schedule toattend the event with her entire staff. Children from the ECF welcomed our Association members witha traditional dance and expressed their gratitude for Supreme Master Ching Hai’s loving concern with aspecial Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony.Miss Getaneh said, “I just hope one day I’ll have the honor tomeet Her. I will make sure that I read the books and understand moreabout this wonderful work that is being done. I think in some waywe have been connected now and it is wonderful for you to come andvisit us, embrace us and give us this opportunity to help us grow. Ireally want to say thank you very much and I hope that She’ll be ableto come and visit us one day as well.
