Chair’s Message continued from page 2Strategic Planning SessionThe Board of Trustees held a Strategic Planning Session on April 18, 2008. Despite the name of the session,it dealt less with strategy than with tactical approaches to accomplish our strategic plan. A major issue facingthe Hawaii Section – and many other organizations – is succession planning.An important consideration for recruiting new committee chairs and trustees is to ensure they know what isexpected of them. A central theme of this year’s planning session was to establish a common goal for eachcommittee chair to develop or refine a timeline and its milestones to accomplish his/her primary responsibility.Though the dates may change from year-to-year, the central responsibilities generally do not. Think aboutawards, nominations, workshops, and our newsletter. Each of these has specific tasks that need to beaccomplished by certain dates to ensure successful delivery. Documenting these will be helpful for successionof new chairs and trustees.In addition to the goal of developing a timeline with milestones for a committee’s primary responsibility, theBoard also established additional goals for the upcoming year:Resolve the memorandum of understanding issues with Water for People to determine continued level ofinvolvement of Hawaii Section in the international program. Paul Scott, Ray Matasci, and MikeCunningham have worked successfully to provide safe drinking water through solar pasteurizationtechnology to schools on Palau. Though Water for People has supported the effort, they have notembraced it nor other Pacific Region projects for continuation. We need to determine the HawaiiSection’s relationship with WFP in the future.Develop a list of potential water-related “rapid response” subjects for which experts in the water professionmight be needed to provide public information. There have been a number of potential high profilepublic issues that have emerged during the last year, including one on microconstituents. ThoughAWWA provided excellent talking points, it would be useful to the Hawaii Section and its members toidentify experts who can speak knowledgeably about the subjects.Develop a proposal for a workforce development program that will help address loss of knowledge andskills from the Hawaii water profession. Just as the Hawaii Section faces issues with successionplanning, so too do public agencies responsible for providing safe drinking water. Since the HawaiiSection is an educational association, we should be able to play a key role in helping sustain a skilledworkforce to ensure safe drinking water.Develop a summary of State and Federal legislation pertinent to membership interest and submit for HawaiiSection website posting. Timely information about legislation – federal and state – is important toensure an opportunity for input and influence. Our goal is to summarize regulations related to our effortsto provide safe drinking water and to apprise our members of the regulations in a timely manner. §Hawaii Section Vision StatementHawaii Section of the American WaterWorks Association will be the leading forcein the State of Hawaii dedicated to safe drinking water.10 AWWA /Hawaii Section Summer 2008

Maui Department of Water Supply honoredManager of the Year, Cari Sumabat and Kauai Department of WaterSupply honored Employee of the Year, Faye Tateishi.The Big Island Men’s Pipe Tapping Team and Kauai Women’s PipeTapping Team represented the section very well. We look forward tonext year in San Diego.Big Island Men’s and Kauai Women’s Pipe Tapping Teams at the 2008Hawaii Section Annual ConferenceAt the Board of Directors’ meeting on Saturday and Sunday, the Boardapproved the Future Annual Conference & Exposition Rotation Plan,beginning in 2019. The approved rotation plan named the cities withinthe three regions: Las Vegas and San Diego in the west region,Chicago and Denver in the central region, and Orlando andWashington, D.C. in the east region.Executive Director Gary Zimmerman presented a look back at AWWAas an organization and a look forward to areas of plannedimprovements.Four candidates running for AWWA Incoming President-Elect alsogave speeches providing an overview of their thoughts and visions forAWWA. They are Don Degen, British Columbia Director and anAWWA Vice-President; Mike Hooker, AWWA Water Utility CouncilChair; Joe Mantua, Chesapeake Director and an AWWA Vice-President and Jerry Stevens, Iowa Director and an AWWA Vice-President.Odds and EndsAWWA also recently announced that the Regional Meeting of SectionOfficers (RMSO) will be held in Hawaii in 2009.
