Excellent planning. Excellentleadership. Congratulations to Roy Silva, Eric Yamashige,and their committee for combining successfully three essentialingredients for an outstanding Hawaii Section annual conference. Anumber of potential barriers to this year’s success materialized duringplanning, but they were all met head-on. As a result there were anumber of records set this year that Roy will discuss elsewhere in thisnewsletter. As if the number of conference successes were not enough,hearing Jo-Ann Taniguchi sing The Way You Look Tonight prior to thebanquet was the proverbial icing on the cake!An important aspect of this year’s conference was the support of TomArizumi and Stuart Yamada of the State Department of Health SafeDrinking Water Branch to arrange grants for attendance of 70 smallwater system operators. The value of this effort was most apparent tome during a conference presentation by Joy Gannon and KevinBaughman. Many grantees attended this presentation. They were notsimply attendees, but active participants who were engaged in thelearning opportunity. These grants also resulted in 42 new HawaiiSection members. Hawaii’s citizens benefited from the professionaladvancement of knowledge to ensure safe drinking water.As a result of some last minute issues, I missed ACE 2008, the hot andhumid weather, the cheese grits, and a chance for an autograph withShane Victorino at a Phillies-Braves game. What is more important, Imissed the opportunity to express an “Aloha y’all” and to havebreakfast with the Hawaii Section attendees. I also missed anopportunity to thank the vendors who participate in the Hawaii Sectionconference each year. Susan Uyesugi always does a great job oforganizing a gift pack and exhibit floor visits to express our thanks.She was in good company with Elson Gushiken, Jo-Ann Taniguchi,and Rich Hopkins.If you haven’t been on the Hawaii Section website recently (http://www.awwa-hi.org/index.htm) please do so. Russell Okita performs anoutstanding job of keeping it up-to-date.I am excited about the upcoming year and look forward to working withthe Board of Trustees, Committee Chairs, and you to strengthen theHawaii Section into 2009 and beyond.
