ACE ‘08 IN ATLANTA—HOT! HOT! HOT!By Susan UyesugiWhen you come from Hawaii, you think you’d be used to heat and humidity but Atlanta was overthe top when it came to the weather!It was interesting to see some of the lingering effects of the tornado that passed through the city in March2008. You could see some areas where repairs were still to be made.Once again, Ray Matasci (Brown and Caldwell) and a group of Hawaii people went to see a baseball gamewhile at ACE. And lucky for them, the Atlanta Braves were playing the Philadelphia Phillies. I say luckybecause it just so happens that AWWA Hawaii Section member and Maui Councilman Mike Vicotrino’s sonShane Victorino plays for the Philadelphia Phillies. And thanks to Mike, the Hawaii group got to meet Shaneand get autographs before the games started. And the best part was that Philadelphia swept Atlanta!On Sunday afternoon, Rich Hopkins, Elson Gushiken, Susan Uyesugi and Jo-Ann Taniguchi visited withthe manufacturers who exhibit at the Hawaii conference and passed out boxes of Hawaiian Host MacadamiaNut Chocolates to thank them for their support.The section breakfast on Monday morning was a great success. Everyone enjoys the opportunity to visit witheach other since we’re on different islands. We were pleased to have from AWWA Staff retired ExecutiveDirector Jack Hoffbuhr as well as the new Executive Director Gary Zimmerman and Section ServicesRepresentative Nancy Sullivan. Only Tap Water Delivers continued from page 1Thursday night’s 34 th Annual Conference Banquet started off with a bang as Hawaii section secretary Jo-AnnTaniguchi demonstrated her award winning talents as she entertained attendees during happy hour. RayMatasci served as master of ceremonies. This year’s George Fuller award was presented posthumously toformer Manager & Chief Engineer of the Honolulu Board of Water Supply Cliff Jamile. His son Kalaaccepted the award on behalf of the Jamile Family.AWWA Hawaii section life members’ awards were also presented to Adam Coelho, Jr., Douglas Kamiya,Jon Nishimura, Kenneth Sakai and William Thompson.Friday’s events included the 2 nd Annual “Top Ops Competition” won by a team from Hawaiian BeachesWater Co. and Wood Valley Water & Farm Coop.
