It is broadly used in the powertrainfield and has already set a standard for powertraincustomers. Transline is successfully used in aFoton-Cummins engine project to produce two typesof Cummins light-duty, high-performance dieselengines in a Beijing manufacturing plant.The plant has an annual capacity of 400,000 unitsand will produce Cummins 2.8-liter and 3.8-literdiesel engines, which will meet worldwide emissionstandards, including Euro IV and Euro V. The projectis based on a joint venture between Beiqi FotonMotor Company and Cummins Inc., forming BeijingFoton Cummins Engine Company Limited (BFCEC).BFCEC represents a further expansion of Cummins’product line in China, where the company is alreadythe leading foreign producer of heavy-duty andmid-range diesel engines. While Cummins is a leadingdiesel engine supplier, Foton Motor is a strongplayer in China’s commercial vehicle industry.Smooth integration within existingtechnology frameworkBFCEC decided to support the new manufacturinglines and processes by implementing Solutions forPowertrain – Transline from Siemens. The solutionwas chosen partly because of its many successfulinstallations around the globe. This gave the managementconfidence in Siemens’ technology anddeployment expertise. The company also preferredSiemens’ extensive process management functionalityas well as its ability to work with the company’srange of product information formats. In addition,the flexibility of Transline was important to ensuresmooth integration within BFCEC’s existing technologyframework. The Transline concept decreasestechnical risk and complexity and enhances theability to manage change. The project included acylinder head machining line, a cylinder bodymachining line, and an engine assembly line.The machine centers for the machining line fromMAG are equipped with Sinumerik 840D. The drivebasedcontrol system offers graduated performance,from simple positioning tasks to complex machiningprocesses. Safety functionality provides reliablepersonnel and machine protection without additionalmonitoring devices.The assembly-line equipment from Dalian Haosen issupported by a Simatic S7-300 controller. This programmablelogic controller (PLC) is also integrated inthe Sinumerik 840D CNC systems. With performancefrom various central processors, the system is capable20 move up | 1-2010
