The sitepreviously housed a Hitachi semiconductorfactory, with a clean-roomarea of 4000 m². Optoganhas invested tens of millionsof euros in the site,which will employ up to100 people. Initial capacitywill be over one billionLED chips per year.According to Optogan,the facility is Europe’s second-largestLED chip-productionsite. The largestis also in Germany, namely Osram OptoSemiconductors’ plant in Regensburg. (Nasdaq:RBCN) hasstated that it has shipped over 200,000 six-inchsapphire wafers to LED manufacturers worldwide.Rubicon had previously announced thatit had upgraded the crystal-growth furnacesin its three manufacturing facilities to allow8-inch sapphire wafer production. Rubiconhas production facilities in Bensenville, IL,Batavia, IL and Penang, Malaysia.Also, Rubicon says it has begun productionof aluminum oxide, the startingmaterial used to manufacture sapphire.On-site processing of aluminumoxide will allow better process controland the growth of higher-quality sapphirewith larger crystals.
