After an astounding 108% marketgrowth in 2010, driven largely by the adoptionof LED backlights in LCD TVs, computermonitors and notebook computers, themarket is expected to grow at a rate ofless than 10% in 2011 (ledsmagazine. _________com/news/8/10/9). Demand for LCDTVs has slowed, and the oversupplyof LEDs caused by widespread capacityexpansion has put strong downwardpressure on prices. Helping conferenceattendees to understand the dynamicsof this rapidly changing and complex marketis a key goal of Strategies in Light 2012.To address the wide range of issues andgrowing pains facing the LED industry,Strategies in Light 2012 has assembled a rosterof distinguished speakers from all levelsof the LED and lighting supply chain, andfrom all parts of the globe. As usual, the conferencewill be kicked off by a presentation ofStrategies Unlimited’s most recent researchupdate and forecast for the worldwide HB-LED market, delivered by Ella Shum, Directorof LED Market Research.Headlining the conference’s Plenary Sessionwill be Ling Wu, General Secretary ofthe China Solid-State Lighting Association.With the expansion of the LED industry inChina much in the news this year, Ms. Wuwill shed light on the future developmentstrategies of China’s SSL industry. Koreahas been a key player in the recent growthof the LED market, and C.H. Lee, CEO ofSeoul Semiconductor, Korea’s largest independentLED supplier, will provide hiscompany’s perspective on the LED industry’strajectory. The final Keynote Speaker,Eric Kim, is CEO of Soraa, Inc., the startupco-founded by LED industry legend ShujiNakamura. After many months of beingin “stealth mode” regarding its technology,Mr. Kim will discuss Soraa’s holisticapproach to LED lighting.Following the opening Plenary Session,SIL 2012 will split into three paralleltracks – the traditional HB-LED Marketand LEDs in Lighting tracks, plus an LEDManufacturing track, new for 2012. Leadingoff the LEDs in Lighting track, StrategiesUnlimited’s Director of LED LightingResearch, Vrinda Bhandarkar, will providean update and forecast of the LEDluminaire and replacement lamp markets.The first keynote speaker will be veteranlighting designer Ted Ferreira, Principalat CD+M Lighting Design Group, who willaddress the issue of sustainable design asit relates to the SSL industry. Dave Ranieri,VP and General Manager of the CommercialIndoor Business Unit, Lithonia Lighting,will discuss the advent of intelligentdigital lighting.The lead keynote speaker for the LEDManufacturing track will be Iain Black, VPof Worldwide Manufacturing, Engineeringand Innovation for Philips Lumileds Lighting,who will address the manufacturingchallenges of dealing with complexity in anevolving market. He will be followed by TomMorrow, Executive VP of SEMI, who will discussthe issues associated with the recentunprecedented expansion of LED manufacturingcapacity around the world. JacobTarn, President of TSMC Solid-State LightingLtd., will provide insight on whether a majorsemiconductor company can help to acceleratethe LED cost-reduction curve.Other speakers in the HB-LED Markettrack will address topics ranging from providingLED-based lighting to the rural poor,to the market for LED backlights in displays,automotive headlamps, LED lighting,and strategies for dealing with thecurrent tumultuous LED market. Twopanel sessions will be offered – oneon new developments in phosphors(including quantum dots) and one ondrivers, controls and dimming.In the LEDs in Lighting track, presentationswill address lighting in the retailindustry, utility energy-efficiency programs,the results of DOE’s Caliper testing ofLED replacement lamps, museum lighting,“smart” street lighting, and the digital controlof lighting, among many other topics.The LEDs in Manufacturing track willfocus on the issues faced by the LED industryas it scales up to unprecedented levelsof high-volume production. Topics tobe addressed will include the developmentand application of new equipment and techniquesto move to larger substrate sizes,increase automation, improve yield andthroughput, and provide lower cost andmore robust packaging.In addition to the three main conferencetracks, Strategies in Light 2012 will continueits tradition of offering a full-day Solid-StateLighting Investor Forum, featuring presentationsby a wide range of advanced technologystart-ups.
