This catastrophe causedthe eventual closure <strong>of</strong> the Treadwell operations in 1922. It was a devastating economicblowto the residents <strong>of</strong> Douglas. By 1920 only 919 people remained in Douglas. Manybusinessmen closed up shop <strong>and</strong> moved south. Fonner Treadwell miners found workat theAlaska <strong>Juneau</strong> mine <strong>and</strong> mill in <strong>Juneau</strong>.<strong>The</strong> Treadwell cave-in was not the only disaster to affect the town. In March <strong>of</strong> 1911 firebroke out <strong>and</strong> destroyed sixteen buildings including two hotels in the area known as FrontStreet. Fifteen years later in, October <strong>of</strong> 1926, another fire hit the community. It turnedsouth <strong>and</strong> raced up St. Ann's Avenue toward Treadwell. By the time the fire was put out, ithad burned the Native village on S<strong>and</strong>y Beach, residences <strong>and</strong> businesses on St. Ann'sAvenue <strong>and</strong> parts <strong>of</strong> Treadwell as far south as the Glory Hole.Inventory <strong>and</strong> Survey <strong>of</strong>Historic Cemeteries in Douglas, Alaska Page 11
