Catholic CemeteryEstablished ca. 1912AHRS No.: JUN-135CBJNo.: H-8Records were not available to confmnthe establishment <strong>of</strong> the Catholic Cemetery <strong>and</strong> therewas no mention <strong>of</strong> it in newspapers <strong>of</strong> 1911 or 1912. However the grave <strong>of</strong>H.P. Carroll wasthe earliest marker identified with a date <strong>of</strong> 1912. Lillian McConnick, <strong>of</strong> a prominentDouglas Catholic family, was buried in the Douglas <strong>City</strong> Cemetery in 1911. According to afamily member, this was because the Catholic Cemetery was not yet developed. It appearsthat all other McConnick family members were buried in the Catholic Cemetery 0<strong>The</strong> survey revealed 24 burial site markers. Based upon visual observations <strong>of</strong> grounddepressions only another 6 burial sites are evident. This number may be low, however, as thearea may have beenregraded to plant <strong>and</strong> maintain grass. <strong>The</strong> descendants <strong>of</strong> theMcConnick Family are primarily responsible for maintaining the cemetery by cutting thegrass <strong>and</strong> periodically brush the area.<strong>The</strong> Catholic Cemetery is located betweenthe Odd Fellows <strong>and</strong> Native cemeteries. Ast<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> Spruce. trees lies between theCatholic <strong>and</strong> Odd Fellows cemeteries <strong>and</strong>there is a small drainage ditch separatingthe Catholic <strong>and</strong> Native cemeteries. <strong>The</strong>Catholic Cemetery slopes gently up hillfrom a service road to the base <strong>of</strong>acondominium housing development. Alarge white cross is centered at. the top <strong>of</strong>the cemetery.. Most <strong>of</strong> the identifiableburial sites are toward the top <strong>of</strong> the slope.<strong>The</strong>re are two burial sites at the lower endbetween the service road <strong>and</strong> DouglasHighway.<strong>The</strong> earliest burial date identified was that<strong>of</strong>R.P. Carroll, October 2, 1912. <strong>The</strong>most recent date is June 6, 1995 when theashes <strong>of</strong> Kathleen Mary McConnick wereplaced at the family plot.<strong>The</strong> grave markers in the CatholicCemetery are a mixture <strong>of</strong> upright <strong>and</strong> flatgranite either engraved or featuring a brassplaque.
