Even though a couple of cemeteries have had recent burials the original character has beenpreserved. In fact, the most recent burials have been into older existing family plots. Also itappears that the more recent burial markers have been laid flat which has not impacted theoverall visual character of the cemetery.ContextThrough examination of the historic trends of the Southeast region and the cities of Douglasand Treadwell, as described earlier in this document, the Douglas cemeteries have beenplaced in their historic context. Historic trends which engendered the growth of Douglas andTreadwell were the establishment of large scale goldmining operations. In 1910 thepopulation estimate of Douglas placed it as the largest community in Southeast Alaska Thiswas due mainly to the impact of the mining economy.During this peak ofpopulation is also the general time of the development of the firstcemeteries in Douglas. Previous to this periodpersons were interred in Juneau. The trend ofincreased population led the community to develop its own cemeteries.Where From Here?It appears that the historic cemeteries of Douglas, Alaska meet the concepts of historicsignificance, historic integrity, and historic context needed for consideration to be placed onthe National Register of Historic Places. Consideration should be given to prepare a multipleproperty nomination of the Douglas historic cemeteries. The inclusion of the historicEvergreen Cemetery in Juneau should also be considered as there was an early associationbetween Juneau and Douglas regarding the interment of community residents. The Survey and Inventory of Historic Cemeteries in Douglas highlights a "need for better careof the cemetery property. Some individuals and groups associated with the cemeteries haveexpressed interest in restoration activities at the cemeteries. Thefirst step in securing fundingfor such work would be a National Register Nomination.Family PlotFence, 1995CBJCollectionPhotograph by Renee HughesInventory andSurvey ofHistoric Cemeteries in lJouglas, Alaska Page 55
