In 1984 a recyclingprogram was initiated and by 1991 the campus implemented its “Quad”system for waste and recycling sorting. The campus also has a robustreuse program that collects unwanted supplies and equipment, and makesthose items available to other University units and the general public. Asa result, the campus diverts over 40% of waste from the landfill.• Efficient Vehicle Fleet. Beginning in 1995 the University beganpurchasing flex fuel vehicles and fueling them with E85 or B20. Whenhybrid vehicles became available, University Fleet Services beganpurchasing those vehicles as well. Today the campus has over 100vehicles using E85 and B20, and 42 hybrid vehicles, including twobuses, in the fleet.• Alternative Modes of Transportation. The University of Minnesota TwinCities campus is the third largest traffic generator in Minnesota. Theoffice of Parking and Transportation consistently promotes transportationmodes that reduce emissions such as walking, biking, carpooling, andsubsidized busing.
