“If money is your hope forindependence you will neverhave it. The only real securitythat a man will have in thisworld is a reserve of knowledge, experience, and ability.”Henry Ford, Ford Motor CompanyEducation& trainingThe global viewKnowledge is a primary driver ofeconomic development and humanprogress. It is key to povertyeradication, improved health, economic growth and sustainabledevelopment. Education and trainingincludes primary and secondaryschooling, as well as higher-levelinstruction, vocational and skillstraining, and capacity building. There is a positive correlation betweenthe literacy rate of a country andeconomic growth. Nations with highlyliterate populations tend to be the most economically developed, whereascountries with low numbers of literate people tend to lag behind in economicand human development (see Figure 7). Among the world’s industrializedcountries, Finland and Norway report 100% adult literacy rates, as comparedto 17.6% in Niger or 26.6% in Burkina Faso, two of the world’s least developedcountries. 12In large parts of the developing world illiteracy rates remain high with anestimated 771 million people, or 18% of the global population, aged 15 years ormore believed to be illiterate. 13 Illiteracy is particularly prevalent among women, the elderly, rural communities and members of the poorest households. WhileSouth Asia (Bangladesh, India, Pakistan) and China are home to more than halfof the illiterate adult population, sub-Saharan African countries have the largestshare of illiterate adults among their population, with illiteracy rates of 40% andmore (see Figure 8).Source: UNDP.
