Görlitz will take you on a journey through time, enabling you to experience
800 years of history along the via regia. The organisers of the tourist
programme have designed a range of special offers to help you and
your guests discover the many and varied treasures of Görlitz, Upper Lusatia
and our neighbouring countries of Poland and the Czech Republic.
Görlitz as a trading city
The former cloth-making city of Görlitz owes a large part of its riches to a
very special plant – woad, which was used in the Middle Ages to dye yarn
and cloth. For many years Görlitz had a trade monopoly in woad. In this
guided tour, which takes participants through the historic old town, we
look at the properties of this plant and the way it was processed.

Movement and mobility in Görlitz
First impressions of Görlitz, its historic locations and the unique via regia
exhibition in Kaisertrutz bastion.

Children's tour
Take your children or school group on an exciting journey of discovery through
the old city with its legendary past. Here they will be initiated into the mysteries
of the medieval "Lusatian League" and hear mysterious stories in the
places where the original events happened – stories such as that of the Klötzelmönch,
the monk who wore clogs, and the tale of the three-legged dog.

You can combine your visit to the Third Saxon State Exhibition with an
exploration of the city of Görlitz and take a guided tour through the
centuries, followed by a magnifi cent view of the whole area from the
Landeskrone hill and a taste of the Silesian cakes that have made the
confectionery of our region famous throughout the entire world.

how quarry workers lived and worked in the nineteenth century, followed
by a tour of the quarry experience nature trail.

3-day programme: From the Middle Ages to the Wilhelminian time – travel through different epochs
Immerse yourself in different epochs. The traditional
Nightwatchman will carry you off to the
legendary medieval world of Görlitz, while the
guided tour of the Wilhelminian quarter enables
you to learn the fascinating history of the via
regia trade route over a period of 800 years.

The trip takes you to a number of places through
which the via regia once passed. Beginning in
Görlitz, the journey takes you to the Sorbian-
Catholic Upper Lusatian region where you can visit
the cloister of St. Marienstern and the Lessing
Museum in Kamenz, followed by the rich heritage
of the Polish cities of Legnica and Wroclaw.
