O<strong>the</strong>r:Testing c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s should be carefully chosen based <strong>on</strong> expert judgment andlabelling to reflect <strong>the</strong> worst case scenario based <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> use and functi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>article. In additi<strong>on</strong>, if a specific labelling informati<strong>on</strong>/instructi<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tains a maximumtemperature for use, <strong>the</strong> temperature c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s will be chosen accordingly from <strong>the</strong>corresp<strong>on</strong>ding temperature exposures in <strong>the</strong> relevant legislati<strong>on</strong>. In any case <strong>the</strong>minimum c<strong>on</strong>tact time for <strong>the</strong> migrati<strong>on</strong> test should be at least 30 minutes. 17.5 Preparati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> laboratory samplesComplete traceability from <strong>the</strong> sample to <strong>the</strong> test result should be ensured.Dust may be removed by wiping <strong>the</strong> sample with a lint-free cloth or brushing with as<strong>of</strong>t brush. If articles are labelled with an instructi<strong>on</strong> that <strong>the</strong>y should be cleanedbefore use <strong>the</strong>n this instructi<strong>on</strong> should be followed before <strong>testing</strong>.7.6 Procedure for repeat use kitchenware – 3 successivemigrati<strong>on</strong> testsNote: Although Commissi<strong>on</strong> Directive 2002/72/EC is repealed by Regulati<strong>on</strong> EC No 10/2011 as from1 May 2011, <strong>the</strong> provisi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> verificati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> compliance with migrati<strong>on</strong> limits for repeated usearticles (Article 23) should be applied until 31/12/2012.Depending <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> article type <strong>the</strong> migrati<strong>on</strong> test is performed ei<strong>the</strong>r by immersi<strong>on</strong> orby filling. The experimental set-up must limit <strong>the</strong> evaporati<strong>on</strong> that occurs during <strong>the</strong> exposurephase. The volume or weight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> simulant should be recorded following <strong>the</strong>completi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> test.7.6.1 Lot(s) <strong>of</strong> individual articlesPolyamide kitchenware articles that require <strong>testing</strong> by immersi<strong>on</strong>The three test specimens for <strong>the</strong> specific migrati<strong>on</strong> test are tested toge<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>on</strong>ebeaker for <strong>the</strong> first exposure and <strong>the</strong> simulant is analysed for PAAs.If <strong>the</strong> test specimens are compliant in this first test assuming that all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> PAAsmeasured in <strong>the</strong> simulant have migrated from <strong>the</strong> article with <strong>the</strong> smallest surfacearea (i.e. <strong>the</strong> worst case), <strong>the</strong>n no fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>testing</strong> is required.Note: Migrati<strong>on</strong> tests are normally c<strong>on</strong>ducted three times for repeat use articles, and <strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> third migrati<strong>on</strong> taken into account. However, <strong>the</strong> migrati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> PAAs is known to decrease after<strong>the</strong> first migrati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong>refore in this scheme <strong>the</strong> simulant from <strong>the</strong> 1 st migrati<strong>on</strong> is analysed for PAAsand if results are compliant <strong>the</strong>n no fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>testing</strong> is required. If <strong>the</strong> samples are not compliant a sec<strong>on</strong>d exposure should be carried out in <strong>the</strong> same way (i.e. all<strong>the</strong> three test specimens exposed toge<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>on</strong>e beaker).1 A minimum c<strong>on</strong>tact time should be 30 minutes because it cannot be dem<strong>on</strong>stratedthat home or catering use would always be less than 5 minutes.11
